TACOMA - Perimeter power pushed the Pierce County League Woodrow Wilson Rams past the visiting Metro League Chief Sealth Seahawks in girls basketball action at the Harry Bird Memorial Gymnasium on Fri., Dec. 22.
Firing home multitudes of baskets from beyond the 3-point arc, Wilson gained a 53-39 win in Ram Country.
The Seahawks led 6-0 following 3-point goals from Jasmine Smith and Aundra Tuchscherer, but Hope Lalau drained a 3-point goal to start a 10-point Ram surge. Smith converted a CS trey to keep CS within 10-9, but the outside shooting and bench strength of Wilson began taking effect as the Rams speeded away with deadly, uncontested 3-pointers and superior rebounding that touched off quick releases in a running game for its players.
Leading 28-9 after one quarter, the Ram lead peaked at a 31-point margin in the second quarter and WW was never challenged, again.
Chief Sealth gave a good account of itself in the second half to cut its deficit to 14 points twice, including the final score.
The learning and transitioning Lady Seahawks are working hard to gain higher levels.
Sealth co-coach Jocelyn Jones explained.
"This is just a process," she said. "Every game is for them to learn and get better."
The other co-coach is also optimistic.
"I'm proud and happy about how the girls are adjusting to a new program for the first time in a long time," said Diondra Alexander. "There's a lot of pressure, but they've bought into the system."
JV head coach Richard Washington also lends his talents to the process.
Senior point guard Smith fired home a trio of 3-pointers as part of her game high 18 points. LaGuardia added 10 Sealth points while Tuchscherer notched nine points. Araeya Reed scored two points.
Eight players scored for Wilson including double figure scorers Brooklyn Grant and Kiara Maxwell with 11 apiece. Aaliyah Walker and Lalau each earned nine.
