Long-time Burien resident, Barbara Jean Just, died peacefully at the Wesley Health Center, May 1, 2018, at the age of 97. She lived in the Burien area from 1949 to 1992 until she and her husband Les Just (1917 – 2002) moved from Five Corners to a cottage at Wesley Homes in Des Moines.
She married Les Just in 1969 and became part of his family which included three daughters, Penny Geiger (Ron), and their daughters, Kristi and Paige; Cheri French and her three sons, Jeff Heyman, Glen Heyman, and Greg Heyman; and Claudia Jones (Bill) and their children, Jeremy, Billy, Bronson, and Julia. The family added 14 great-grandchildren. Barb and Les also included Jim and Karen Canterbury and their four sons as part of their extended family. Surviving Barbara is her nephew, Richard Riley, who lives in Ontario, California.
She and Les owned and operated City Sheet Metal in Kent from the early 1970’s to mid-1980’s, and together they bought and renovated homes in Vashon Island, Gig Harbor, and Port Ludlow. They had a happy and loving marriage for 32 years.
Barbara at age 83 married John “Barney” Walls after Les died and continued living at Wesley Homes until Barney died in 2014. She was previously married to Tod Lyons in 1949 in Burien; they had no children.
Barbara Jean Kemper was born October 23, 1920 in Santa Ana, California. She grew up in San Bernardino, California, studied nursing in Los Angeles and received her registered nurse license in California in 1943, studied obstetric nursing in New Jersey in 1945, and received her B.S. degree in nursing at University of Washington in 1949 and worked for Boeing as a nurse. She loved working as a nurse for Dr. Ed Turner, Ob-Gyn, in Burien for more than 20 years.
A private family memorial service will be conducted at a later date.
