It was a huge seventh inning for the Nisqually League Seattle Christian baseball team that saved the game for the visiting Warriors against Chimacum of the Olympic League at Curtis High School on Tues., May 7.
Tied at 8-8 after six complete innings, the visiting Warriors quickly fell into two outs.
Then SC amplified the meaning of two-out lightning.
Keaton Banister began the strike with a lead off triple - his second of the game - deep to the right center field fence, ending with a head first slide into third base.
Connor Knack then walked before scooting into second base on an indifference play. Up stepped Colin Heffernan, who lined a two-run single into right field.
Tripling deep into center field, Jeff Sichmeller plated a third run. A dropped pop fly resulted in another tally.
Sam Bock, Nolen Stevenson, Sam Arcares(2), Jeff Sichmeller and Trevor Clute delivered run-scoring hits. Mixed in with two walks and two errors, the final two-out rally of 12 runs culminated in a 17-batter inning.
Colin Heffernan mopped up for SC in the bottom of the inning by striking out all three batters in the 20-8 win.
The 1A West Central District victory propelled SC (15-4) into a Thursday title match up against Bellevue Christian. In head to head regular season games, the teams split victories.
”We had the top of the lineup (in the seventh),” said Knack. “It produced such good things.”
Good things for the Warriors when RBI’s by Bock, Stevenson, and Arcarese created a three-run second inning.
Clute and Bock each knocked home a run in the third inning and the Warriors were in control at 5-0.
Five walks and a pair of base hits brought the Cowboys within 5-4 after three full innings.
A wild pitch and a Sichmeller ground out each notched a run to push the SC advantage to 7-4 in the top of the fourth inning.
In the bottom of the frame, Chimacum surged back with three runs to tie the game at 7-7.
Banister led off the Warrior fifth with an opposite field triple into the right field corner. Knack then sent Seattle Christian back into the lead, but Chimacum tied the score on a sixth inning run as the action flowed into the decisive seventh inning.
”It was a good game’” said Banister. “We were putting players into situations of putting it together. It was little things.”
Head coach Craig Wrolstad put events under a more critical eye,
“We didn’t pitch well,” he said, “Too many free passes. The hitters had some good at bats and we’re ready to move on.”
Connor Knack, Jack Garris, Coilin Heffernan, Jeremy Beebe, Luke Pizzey, Sam Arcarese, David Kudenchuk, Reiss Magee, Jace Brittany, Austin Hilburn, Trevor Clute, Keaton Banister, Sam Bock, Jeff Sichmeller and Nolen Stevenson comprise the district player roster.
Assisting head coach Wrolstad is Greg Knack.
Wrolstad is also the athletic director.
