Increased intensity and elevated execution powered the Tyee girls basketball team to a 60-10 SPSL 2A North opening victory against visiting Highline on Fri., Dec. 13.
As the first part of a boys and girls varsity twin bill on Quad Night (Celebration of past, present, and future Tyee grads) the Totems emulated the Homecoming King and Queen by completely taking charge against a very inexperienced Pirate team.
Although the completely rebuilding HHS squad featured one junior, seven sophomores, and a pair of freshmen, it was the Pirates who showed early energy to take a 4-0 lead on two outside shot baskets from Diamond Concepcion.
Tyee started coming out of its lethargy to forge an 8-5 lead after one quarter.
Led by point guard Mackenzie Sewell and the awesomely aggressive Tiday Sesay, the Totems dominated play with good half court plays and ball hawking defense to win the second quarter and essentially the game with a 23-3 surge for a halftime 31-8 control.
”We just had to get back into our plays and run our plays to actually get them to go,” said Sewell, who also notched 10 points.
An 11-0 Totem third quarter further enhanced the Tyee fortunes against a battling, but outgunned Highline team as the game marched onward.
“I just had to think of positive things,” said 20-point producer Sesay.
As a whole, the supporting cast held up well.
