Steals and quick scores in the third quarter activated a sluggish 1A Nisqually League Seattle Christian offense en route to a 32-22 inter league girls basketball victory at SPSL 2A Tyee on Fri., Dec. 20.
Leading only 13-10 at halftime, the Warriors put on their after burners in the third quarter.
Six-footer Justyce Porter opened up the second half on a pick and roll lay up to ignite SC.
Following a Makin Yee free throw for the Totems, Seattle Christian shifted into high gear for steals behind senior point guard Olivia Clark.
Clark's give and go lay up plus free throw led to her straight on on three-goal. Keeping up the momentum, Clark nailed a three-ball from downtown.
The Warrior press reaped dividends as the Totems were aggressive, but careless with the ball. Their half court offense was completely disrupted.
Tida Sesay's rebound basket cut the SC lead from 24-11, but Clark was on the main stage, again with a long three-pointer to open the fourth quarter.
The Warriors were in control at 27-13, but the Totems stayed aggressive with a scrambling defense and offense against a tiring Warrior team to close within 27-18 midway through the final quarter.
Seattle Christian held a 30-18 with leass than three minutes to go, Tiday Sesay battled for five consecutive Tyee points to trim the Tyee deficit to 30-22 at the two minute mark.
SC grabbed an offensive rebound and Porter scored thirty seconds later for the final points of the game.
Head coach Jasen Baskett and his daughter, starting player Emma, were absent with flu for Seattle Christian. Five-foot, ten-inch Kyra Goodspeed was also absent due to the flu.
Assistant coach Kara Kogle assumed head coach duties and had he view of the game.
"Olivia steals and scores were important," said Kogle. "The girls played hard the entire game. We had turnovers and din't make shots. Give credit to our point guard's effort."
Tyee hauled in 54 rebound as a team, but 35 turnovers painted an uneasy picture for the Totems. An 8 of 37 field goal performance added even more to a forceful, but uneven effort.
SC stole the ball 19 times to bewilder its opponents.
As usual, Clark was a mainstay for the Warriors with 19 points and nine total steals in 32 minutes of playing time. Porter rose up for 10 points, nine rebounds and four steals. Madison Gilbert scored the other three Warrior points.
Seasay was the leading scorer for Tyee at seven, but had 12 boards. Sam Hailu added five points and 14 rebounds.
