Wolverines edge Pirate girls

Energy surges enabled the Evergreen girls basketball team to hold off an inspired Highline squad 34-27 in SPSL 2A action on Thurs., Dec. 19.
After Highline High School had closed its deficit to 27-25, the final four minutes provided the final key to victory at Highline College.
Senior guard Malia Proctor fed Totem forward Olivia George who completed a standard three-point play to with just more than three minutes remaining in the fourth quarter.
After wing player Diamond Concepcion countered with a short range basket, Carmella Todd popped home a six-foot basket.
Proctor garnered a pair of rebounds, eventually leading to a wide open lay up by George. It was George who earned the final basket of the game.
“It was effort and energy,” said Wolverine assistant coach Glenn McCray. “We came out with more energy in the second half. We squeezed out the energy and sustained in the second half.
HHS led 12-11 after two quarters of ferocious basketball.”
The Wolverines were slow out of the gate and were static against the Pirate zone defense, came out with renewed energy to open the second half.
Quicker passing and driving for inside shots began for Evergreen as evidenced by a quick passing sequence that led to two free throw conversions by George.
Proctor and George joined forces to produce eight more Wolverine points as Evergreen pulled away to a 21-12 control.
Highline revived its fortunes when Disha Jakhu torched a three-ball.
Concepcion and Jakhu kept the pressure on to bring the Pirates back within 23-21 by the end of the third quarter.
Eunice Toalama banked home a basket and converted a runner to stretch the Evergreen margin to 27-21 before a 4-0 HHS scoring run set up the fateful moments.
“I was super pumped up,” said George who was potent for 22 points. “I posted up and looked for the pass to do what I do.”
Concepcion burned the twine for 18 points.
”It was a good effort,” said HHS Head coach Mo Montgomery about her young team. “They showed a lot more energy.”
