West Seattle wins age 9-10 championship

sports CORRESPONDENT

South Highline American came into the age 9-10 Little League All Stars District 7 championship baseball game ready to go. But West Seattle was ready, too, and in tune with each other.

The coaching being 'in tune' perhaps signaled more than anything else why WS beat the Des Moines charter, 6-5, at Bar S Fields Saturday, July 2.

"It's the second year Bob (Hellenger) and I have coached the 9-10s together," said Darron Forsell, manager of West Seattle's all stars.

Monorail's rough night

Although there was plenty of loud anti-monorail invective at the public hearing at West Seattle High School, the Seattle Monorail Board heard more encouragement than derision.

Thirty-four speakers urged the board to continue working on the monorail, 22 people recommended killing the project, and a half dozen speakers seemed to be both for and against it.

This was the third and final public hearing originally scheduled months ago to review the proposed contract between the Seattle Monorail Project and the Cascadia Monorail Co.

New direct ferry may bypass Fauntleroy

A proposed new ferry route that would skip Fauntleroy and head straight downtown from Southworth could reduce traffic through West Seattle.

The new route is but one proposal in Washington State Ferries' 25-year plan for terminals and vessels, which was presented to Fauntleroy residents June 30 at the Hall at Fauntleroy. About 30 people attended.

The new route, which could be enacted in 2012, would relieve demand for ferry service from Southworth to downtown due to increasing development in Kitsap County, said Ray Deardorf, the ferry system's planning director.

Corr runs to overcome weak City Council mode

City Council candidates Casey Corr was for three years a full-time assistant to Mayor Greg Nickels and admits he has to remind people he is his own man.

"I'm my own guy," said Corr in an interview last week. "I think I'm highly qualified in this race."

Corr wants to oust seven-year incumbent council member Richard Conlin, up for re-election this year. Conlin has been a popular target, with at least three opponents unofficially declaring their intentions to run against him.

'City Dog' is started after owner gets pup

When Brandie Ahlgren's interest in marketing research connected with her newfound love of dogs, she saw a business opportunity.

Ahlgren, a White Center resident, is founder, editor and publisher of a new quarterly publication called City Dog magazine. The first issue came out in June and includes a "dog's eye view" of West Seattle.

There are write-ups about walking your dog in Lincoln Park, Schmitz Park Preserve, Alki Beach Park and, of course, the off-leash dog area at Westcrest Park.

A few twisted preditors able to ruin things for rest of us

By Kyra-lin Hom

I'm a young girl with time to kill over the summer. Seeing as I live in one of the fattest nations in the world, shouldn't my father be happy that I want to spend it getting in better shape?

That was the reasoning going through my mind when I proposed to my parents the idea of walking down to a local track and running a mile or two every couple of days. I'm old enough to have a little independence and do this on my own, right?

My parents thought quite differently.
