Baseball trip to Japan to provide memories

sports CORRESPONDENT

Fun for the Federal Way all-star baseball team was had in a foreign land as it traveled all over Japan to see the sights and play ball June 25 to July 5.

Players came from area high schools for senior trips that were a lot farther in distance unless Tokyo, Japan is not that far.

That's exactly where one over a dozen high school ballplayers went for fun in the sun in a climate similar to ours.

American comes up short

SEATTLE - Federal Way American's heroic comeback fell just short in an 8-6 loss to District 8 Northeast Seattle in the 2005 Washington State Junior (13-14 age) Little League All Star tournament hosted by District 8 at Lower Woodland on July 18.

With the loss, District 10 American was eliminated from further tournament action.

"I'm proud of what this team has done," said an upbeat Winston Gatlabayn.

MSC's Emergency Family Shelter Gets a Makeover

The Community Center building at the Emergency Family Shelter operated by the Multi-Service Center just off Military Road and the Kent-Des Moines Highway, was showing its age. Then three area corporations recognized the need, stepped forward, and have created a local version of "Extreme Makeover."

Once base housing for the Navy's Nike Missile Base in the '60s and '70s, the four-block area was deeded to King County several years ago by the federal government. The King County Housing Authority then sublet the single family homes to three non-profit organizations, including MSC, to be used for housing programs. Although the site has been well-maintained since then, the homes are definitely '50s vintage architecture, and the majority of the maintenance funds have been spent for basic, functional needs...plumbing, wiring, paint and cleanup.

The Community Center, once one of the base homes, serves as a meeting ground, intake office and counseling office for the three current housing providers sharing the units: Highline Mental Health, St.

Things are popping at the symphony

When you have lunch with Mary Gates and Betty Huff, you have to accept a periodic interruption from friends of theirs. At Indochine recently, where Mary ordered a shrimp dish with a five-star degree of hotness, and Betty a more demure Thai salad, we gnoshed and talked symphony and the exciting pops program planned for August 13. Now and again, someone they knew would drift by the table (Mark Clirehugh, then Peggy Laporte) to say hello.

The very good reason for this is that these two women are among the leaders and shakers in town who makes things happen.

Holiday in Federal Way

Here's an idea: Instead of flying, driving, training or bussing off to some exotic locale this vacation season, just stay here in town. Let everybody else hit the highway and leave the city wide open for you and the family. Think of it, with nobody in town you can put your feet up on the theater seat in front of you, take your pick of any table at Salty's, have just about any movie you want at Blockbuster, they're practically giving them away when summertime comes around. You'll have time to try all 31 flavors at Baskin and Robbins, pitch your tent in Celebration Park, the cops won't bother you as long as 200 other people don't do the same thing and start a tent city. That's not going to happen anyway because everybody is out of town.

You can throw yourself a frisbee and actually run and catch it without knocking somebody over at Steel Lake Park. You can hop in the car, park it on 320th on the freeway overpass and count the blue cars (slug your husband in the arm when a Volkswagon goes by, he'll think it's funny).

I actually did this a couple of years ago. My normal vacation to Antartica got cancelled due to good weather so Mrs.
