No juice in 'Dreamer'

Director John Gatins' new family drama about a race horse, "Dreamer," took me back to an unhappy incident with a snake. A cinematic snake actually (one reason it came to mind) I encountered years ago in the movie "The Black Stallion" another race horse drama (and the other reason to remember it).

I was watching the movie with my children when the shipwrecked young hero was suddenly threatened by a cobra.

An absurd burden

It is sad to see that Sound Food Cafe on Vashon Island may end providing food and beverage s to riders on the Fauntleroy, Vashon, Southworth ferry run. The problem is simply that the small island restaurant can't afford to maintain contract requirements that a huge international food services company walked away from.

In a story by Lauri Hennessey on Page One, co-owner Bob Dorn of Sound Food said they tried to make money but just were not able to make the savings needed.

Legislative mandates not solution to outsourcing

When legislators return to Olympia in January, some will renew their push to stop "outsourcing" by imposing a whole new set of restrictions on state purchases.

Their stated purpose is laudable: Halting the flow of jobs to out-of-state or foreign companies by mandating that the state purchase only goods and services produced in Washington state. It sounds good in theory, but it won't work.

- State government could stipulate that it buy its coffee only from Starbucks because it is roasted and packaged in Seattle.

Vashon ferry food in doubt

For more than a year now, commuters and tourists who travel the ferry between Fauntleroy and Vashon or Southworth have happily consumed food provided by Sound Food Cafe, located on Vashon. Now that service is in doubt.

The local eatery stepped in and picked up the contract after Sodexho stopped providing food on the ferry system almost two years ago. However, after problems arose between Sound Food and the food workers recently, the restaurant's owner almost cancelled the food contract.

Fighting for their family's value

As Chris Gamache and Judy Fleissner made their way up the Washington Supreme Court steps earlier this year to argue for their right to marry as a same-sex couple, the Ballard residents wanted more than anything to shield their two children, 5-year-old Tillie and 9-year-old Noah, from the chants and cries of thousands of protestors.

Mostly of religious affiliation, the protestors shouted things like, "God hates you!" and "You're going to hell, sinners!"

Gamache and Fleissner said they try to teach their children compassion and understanding, and when Tillie and Noah began

Winter and garden rooms

Tracy Mehlin

In December I tend to do most of my gardening from the comfort of my rocking chair by the window. Planning, scheming, dreaming.

I have big plans for a new garden "room" in my backyard. Have you heard about this "room" concept? The idea is that a garden is more interesting if it divided into smaller sections or rooms that are distinct from the larger space. A room can be defined by "walls" of a hedge or screen of some kind, the "floor" such as paving or lawn, the "ceiling," a pergola or string of twinkling lights.

Cracks in tunnel support? City Council not unanimous on viaduct replacement

After a resolution was adopted last year in support of Mayor Greg Nickels' preferred tunnel option to replace the damaged Alaskan Way Viaduct, some Seattle City Council members are now leaning towards the alternative rebuild option.

"In talking with my colleagues, I can tell you that we are all over the map," said councilman David Della.

Bleakney's legacy

Dean Wong

Thomas M. "Mel" Bleakney was remembered during a memorial service at the Ballard Elks Lodge Number 827. Bleakney lived to be 103 years old and loved to serve the community through his work as a Ballard Lion and as a dentist.

Bleakney's daughter Pat Okura sat down with the News-Tribune to talk about her father and the memorial attended by many friends and family.

"It was really nice. It was like a memorial party or gathering. "If dad was there, he would have enjoyed it," said Okura.

Bleakney's wife, Mary preceded him in death in 2001.

Crazy Jack's New Year's Resolutions

In December of 2004, I resolved to lose weight. Sure, it's a vague resolution, but I did it. I have to confess that I did not do it all on my own. It was my friend, Crazy Jack, who helped me realize that you have to pick your battles.

_Crazy Jack is not really crazy, just eccentric and maybe a little bit psychic. A big, balding lunk of man who took a piece of shrapnel in the head while in the service, he knows who is calling before he picks up the phone and can predict the weather by the way his ears feel.
