Gardens shows and seeds to sow

Do you miss hearing Carl Elliot of KUOW on Wednesday mornings? Or maybe you work Wednesday morning and so never enjoyed this local gardening guru on the radio. Well now you can download the archived pod casts from the KUOW website (www.kuow.org). A podcast is essentially an audio file that can be downloaded from the Internet and then listened to via computer or played on a MP3 player (such as an iPod, thus the name).

In Praise of hoofing it

One of the great things about Ballard is that it is one of those places where people still actually walk around. Even during the recent Great Rain, it was common to see people alone or in groups of two or three walking about all around the community. Ballard is a naturally fine place to walk, in part due to its relative geographic compactness and by virtue of having a vibrant downtown area. In the residential areas, the alleys behind many homes make for fascinating strolls.

Making every

vote count

By Sen. Jeanne Kohl-Welles

"The right of voting for representatives is the primary right by which other rights are protected. To take away this right is to reduce man to slavery, for slavery consists in being subject to the will of another, and he that has not a vote in the election of representatives is in this case."

Thomas Paine, "Dissertation on First Principles of Government," 1795

"It's not the voting that's democracy; it's the counting." _

Dramatist Tom Stoppard, "Jumpers," 1972
