IRS gives hurricane victims more time to file for disaster losses

Victims of Hurricanes Katrina, Rita or Wilma wishing to claim disaster-related losses on their federal income tax return will have until Oct. 16, to make this choice, the Internal Revenue Service says.

Taxpayers suffering disaster-related losses in certain areas of Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana and Texas due to the hurricanes can choose to claim those losses on their current or prior year return.

Admiral suffers strong-arm robberies

On Thursday afternoon, a number of citizens called in reports of strong-arm robberies in the Admiral area. In one case, three teens jumped from a black 2000 4-door Honda and assaulted several teens at the corner of California SW and SW Lander. Other incidents occurred at California and Massachusetts and on SW Hanford. The suspects are a white, black, and Hispanic male, from 5'6" to 6'in height.

$15K says she's no fair weather fan

Ballard resident Stephanie Lagervall received an all-expenses paid trip to the Super Bowl in Detroit, MI after winning a radio station contest.

Lagervall had made numerous calls to KISS 106.9 FM and finally got through as the 12th caller on January 27.

"I had a picture of Matt Hasselbeck and kissed it for good luck," said Lagervall.

Four days later the station telephoned her with the good news.
