Liberty may get new base, casting

Alki's miniature Statue of Liberty - weather-worn, cracked and vandalized - might soon be recast and re-enshrined with commemorative pavers and a new plaza at Alki Beach.

Northwest Programs for the Arts, which stages the Seattle Music Fest at Alki Beach in the summer, spearheaded a fund-raising campaign for a bronze cast of the statue. The nonprofit organization also arranged for architects to donate their design skills for a new base and a small plaza around the base of the statue.

School group eyes time limits

The 15-member Community Advisory Committee began the complex task of recommending which K-8, alternative and elementary schools to close, consolidate or relocate at their first meeting last week.

Some members feared their May 26 deadline wouldn't be long enough to solicit adequate community input.

So far, a series of community meetings and weekly gatherings with the committee as a whole will roll out the closure/consolidation plan.

Sylvan Way to be widened near homes

Sylvan Way, one of West Seattle's most vital east-west arterial streets, remains closed while workers replace much of the street's road base after encountering unstable soils under the street when they tried to hook up a sewer line.

A few weeks ago, workers were installing a sewer system for a new 178-unit townhouse development called Sylvan Heights under construction next to Sylvan Way. The housing project's sewer line is supposed to tap into the main sewer line buried under Sylvan Way.

Junction will keep all-way pedestrian crossing

The Seattle Department of Transportation might want to redesign the Junction's midblock crosswalks when it repaves California Avenue this summer, but city transportation officials don't plan to add parking pay stations or change the Junction's walk-all-ways intersection.

The California Avenue repaving project will extend from Southwest Edmunds Street northward to Admiral Way.

Transportation officials worry about crosswalks that span four lanes, such as are found in the Junction, said Gregg Hirakawa, spokesman for the Seattle Department of Transportation.
