Skateboarders' plans grind on

Skateboarders in Seattle have reason to celebrate, despite a recent setback at the proposed Lower Woodland skate park. Last Tuesday, February 21, the Seattle City Council unanimously approved a resolution creating a task force charged with developing a plan for how to make Seattle a skate-friendly community. The task force will propose how and where skateboard facilities should be built around the city.

The resolution, introduced by the city council's parks committee chairman, David Della, authorizes creation of a group made up of volunteers and city employees.

Get out of your car

Don't be fooled into thinking it's election time again when brightly colored signs and posters begin showing up around Ballard this spring and summer. It's actually King County Metro's campaign to encourage the use of alternative modes of transportation.

"The idea is to create a buzz around doing something different," said Carol Cooper, the project's coordinator for Metro.

The grant-funded program In Motion has been promoted in four King County neighborhoods since 2004.

Falcons batter Beavers

In girls basketball the Ballard Beavers lost their first playoff game to the Woodinville Falcons 76-47 on the road.

Ballard was in a double elimination KingCo tournament in which they needed to lose two games to drop out or win two games to advance to the next round.

Seniors Gillian Huggins and Charlotte Shannon, both forwards with strong inside games were eager to start the post season after some less than successful years under former coach Erin Bailey.

Shannon scored 12 points and Huggins 11 points in the Falcon game.
