Pioneer Highline newsman dies

Highline’s first newspaperman has died.

Vance Orchard passed away March 7 in Walla Walla from cancer diagnosed just a week earlier. He was 88.

Mr. Orchard first started writing news stories for the Highline High School newspaper.

In 1936, he graduated from Highline and was hired three years later by 92-year-old printer Alfred C.

School bond approved on first try

The Highline School District's $148 million bond has apparently passed on its first try.

With all votes cast at polls in the March 14 election and most of the absentee votes counted, 64.35 percent (11,311) of Highline voters approved the bond while 35.65 percent (6,267) rejected it.

The bond needs a 60 percent yes vote to be approved.

Updated results are available at www.metrokc.gov/elections.

Final results will be certified on March 23.

The bond would finance the rebuilding of four elementary schools and other district upgrades.

State senator challenged

The Democrats should rejoice more for adjourning earlier, rather than the fact that they gutted the Initiative 601 State Spending Limit (of 6 percent). They voted to increase the 2006 Budget by 17.4 percent -- the largest increase in budget spending in the history of the state of Washington.

Instead of reaching across the aisle and working together with the Republicans, the Democrats muzzled the Republicans and charged ahead with their spending agenda.

Senator Keiser states that small businesses now have the ability to offer health insurance to certain employees.

Senator rebuts column

In response to the recent Ralph Nichols editorial that began with a quote suggesting citizens’ liberty and property are in jeopardy when the Legislature is in session, I would offer this quote from Thomas Jefferson:

"I know of no safe depository of the ultimate powers of the society but the people themselves, and if we think them not enlightened enough, the remedy is not to take it from them but to inform their discretion."

I think all of us should strive to inform, and not to inflame the people.

To that end, I would like to point out that none of the bud

Grateful President Bush delivers for 'have-mores'

In his column last week, Ralph Nichols suggested he and I are kind of the Highline version of Sean Hannity and Alan Colmes.

While Ralph and I work well together and I appreciate Ralph complementing me as genuinely nice, I have no wish to be likened to Hannity’s hand-picked ineffectual sidekick on Fox (Faux) News.

If we have to emulate a liberal/conservative team, let’s go with James Carville and Mary Matalin.

Last week, Ralph also admitted limited-government conservatives are finally losing patience with President Bush over increased spending.

A live flag pole ornament

When the phone rang and my neighbor said there was an eagle out front, I raced out with my trusty digital camera and got a shot of a young bird on their bulkhead.

But a few seconds later, two adult birds came swooping overhead being chased by several seagulls.

I watched in fascination and suddenly one eagle landed right on top of the gold ball on our flag pole.

People along the shoreline from Alki to Dash Point see a number of these magnificent birds throughout the year.
