Hope Lutheran drill team repeats first place victory

Walk through the front doors of Hope Lutheran School and a prominent display of freshly won trophies will likely be the first to catch attention. But it's on the walls, where framed pictures of academic and sports teams hang, that have captured the school's pride in the faces of the students who've participated in the Lutheran Elementary School Tournament.

In February, students helped to keep a 35-year tradition alive when they competed in events like swimming, music, dance, math, basketball and cheerleading at the Portland tournament over President's Day weekend.

Beaver baseball begins

In baseball, the Ballard Beavers will field a team of veteran players as they aim for a spot in the KingCo playoffs after coming up short by one game last year.

Head Coach Kevin Miller says there are many players on the team who have been around long enough to know the system. One of the team leaders is Lars Phillips, a standout first baseman. "The team is looking pretty good. We have 11 seniors, seven returning senior starters," said Phillips.

Miller is impressed with Phillips defense and describes him as a "vacuum" at first base.

Pubs - the roomy and the cozy casual

The fact that the greater Ballard area is awash in pubs and clubs, taverns and bars, restaurants and night spots is a surprise to nobody. There's such a wide variety of these joints, however, that navigating them can be a bit daunting. Well, your friends at the Ballard News-Tribune are here to help. In this new column, we'll be visiting various Ballard businesses and introducing you to some of the multitude of saloons and lounges in town. Cheers!

To blast this thing off, I figured we'd start with a place that's been around for well over a decade.
