Study shows bias crime

A citizen's study of bias-motivated attacks in Seattle neighborhoods indicates that West Seattle is not immune from prejudice.

In fact, the report that was released earlier this month by Ballard resident Ken Molsberry found bias attacks are not uncommon in any Seattle neighborhood.

Through records from the Seattle Police Department's bias-crime database, Molsberry categorized bias-motivated incidents by neighborhood from 2000 to 2005. More than 400 incidents were documented in all 18 Seattle neighborhoods. Some included verbal and physical threats.

Park to replace old substation

The hum of electrical power at the old California Avenue Substation will soon be replaced by the buzz of public meetings and recreational activities.

Until they get a better place to play, parents as well as children living in the surrounding neighborhood gather to play in an empty church parking lot at the corner of Dakota Street and 44th Avenue Southwest, said Kevin Broveleit, a neighbor and volunteer helping to create the new park.

About half of the White Center Food Bank's new building is for food storage, said Rick Jump, executive director.

"In King County, in the Seventh District, for too long we've had a controversial, extremist congressman" who has given his constituents "a lack of representation."

McDermott is "one of the most ineffective (members of Congress) in constituent service, who spends more time with enemies of this country than he doe

Ballard Hospital's financial diagnosis inconclusive

Editor: Two weeks ago the Ballard News Tribune reported on plans to convert the Swedish Ballard campus from a full service acute care hospital to a "comprehensive ambulatory center with low intensity inpatient services." This would be a major change for the hospital and for Ballard.

Here is the situation as I understand it. So-called day surgery would continue to take place at Ballard, but procedures involving more than a few nights in the hospital would be done at other facilities - presumably First-Hill or Providence.
