Viewlands Elementary School parents and community members hope their vision to grow Viewlands towards an environmentally focused preschool through eighth grade will make as much sense to the Seattle Public School District as it does to them.

"It's a very united feeling at Viewlands," said parent Lynn Miller.

The idea is to develop Viewlands from a general K-5 to an environmentally focused school by phasing in additional grades overtime.

One of the first things we learn as kids is to share. Believe it or not, this is also a key to sustainable living. We sometimes think of sustainability as individual self-reliance, but a sustainable life takes place in a self-reliant community; because sharing conserves resources. Here are just a few easy ideas:

Share Books. Unless it's a reference book that you need to use repeatedly, think about sharing books with other people. The Seattle Public Library has a huge inventory of books and with their online system, you can order a book and pick it up at your local branch.

The Federal Way Public Schools (FWPS) will now have a harder time living up to its tagline: "Every Student, a Reader."

The days of a professional full-time librarian presiding over the reference desk and bookshelves at each of our 34 school are over, at least for now.

Facing a $4 million deficit for the coming school year, the school district had to make significant budgetary cuts to avoid going bankrupt.
