Alki Council not representative

I am a longtime resident of the Alki community. I am writing this letter to express my anger about how the Alki Community Council is targeting certain restaurants on Alki Beach with bogus complaints.

The people who are in charge of the Alki Community Council have been writing letters and communicating with the city to complain about the fact that more restaurants that serve alcohol are opening on Alki Beach.

Parking in Ballard isn't worth the hassle

Editor:

I am writing because I have lived in north Ballard for 19 years and I have often enjoyed shopping in Ballard. I liked being able to park and walk around. I usually went to JoAnn Fabrics, Bartell Drugs, and then down the street to Starbucks and around to some of the other nice little shops in downtown Ballard. Many times, I found some unique items to purchase.

I would like the city planners of Ballard to know that I will no longer be shopping in Ballard. The reason for my decision is that I do not want to pay for parking there.

Budget statistics defended

Ralph Nichols was rather free with his criticisms of Burien Residents Against Annexation, and merits a response.

In the past week, we have been accused of being racists by Gerry Robison before the planning commission, it was inferred by Deputy Mayor Block that critical analysis of budgets is a slander against the fine record public servants in the city staff, and Fire and Police departments, and now Mr. Nichols accuses us of spreading disinformation.

First, let me acknowledge that some weeks back, I misread a statistic at a Lions Club luncheon.

Digital technology enhances patient care

State-of-the-art "digital health information technology" at Highline Medical Center is enhancing patient care and providing more convenient services.

The medical imaging technology, known as a "picture archiving and communication system," makes patient images and diagnostic reports available electronically to radiologists and other caregivers.

This augments the ability of health service providers to make faster, more informed treatment decisions.

Series of annexation meetings scheduled

Burien residents will have opportunities to learn about the city's "preferred alternative" for a potential annexation of the North Highline unincorporated area at a series of public meetings planned for September and October.

Those attending these meetings, in turn, will have opportunities to give city council members their views on the annexation plan.

The council voted Aug. 14 to select as a preferred alternative the annexation of neighborhoods in Shorewood and the Salmon Creek/Southern Heights areas just north of the city.

Heated words at PAC meeting

Members of the Burien Residents Against Annexation Political Action Committee last week challenged others who support annexing the North Highline unincorporated area at a meeting of the PAC.

A mix of ideas concerning possible annexation was tossed about by residents of Burien and North Highline, including the economics of the proposed action, the diversity of the area, and the next step to get information to the public.

"To take a city on and to promise them things is not fair," said PAC member Peggy Sharkey.

Rep. Smith sees problem with illegal immigration

Calling illegal immigration "rampant," U.S. Rep. Adam Smith told Burien Lions Club members last week the first step toward solving this problem is to get "better control of our borders."

Smith, a Democrat whose 9th Congressional District includes Des Moines, Normandy Park, SeaTac and part of Burien, said he is "not necessarily opposed to a fence" along the United States' border with Mexico.

Ten to 20 million illegal immigrants now in the U.S.
