Painted Lady on the market at $2.5 million

The Painted Lady - a grand old Beach Drive mansion set on almost an acre of land with a pond and gazebo - is for sale.

It has 10 rooms including a formal entry, master bedroom with a fireplace and veranda, oak floors, as well as front and back covered porches. The asking price is $2.5 million, which was reduced because the 96-year-old structure needs a new foundation.

Unfortunately one of the estate's assets, its wide and deep front lawn, is a tempting property apart from the mansion.

State smoking rate drops nearly 18 percent

The adult smoking rate in Washington has dropped to 17.8 percent, which is the fifth-lowest smoking rate in the country.

Adult smoking in Washington has dropped by 21 percent since the state began its comprehensive Tobacco Prevention and Control Program in 2000, far outpacing the national rate of decline.

"I am proud that Washington has become a national leader in the battle against tobacco use," said Governor Chris Gregoire. "It has taken a lot of hard work and the consistent decline in adult smoking rates shows that the hard work is paying off.

Unemployment audits to be fairer to employers

The Employment Security Department says it has reshaped its employer-auditing program as part of its efforts to make the unemployment-insurance system more equitable for employers across the state.

The department is now focusing its audits on employers and industries that are more likely to misreport information or file incorrectly.

When employers do not report wages and hours correctly, benefits for unemployed workers may be calculated at a higher rate than warranted. It can also lead to higher socialized tax rates.

'It wasn't easy' but she finished

Attempting the impossible, or at least, the unreasonable, I did two tough things this summer. I climbed Mount Rainier all the way to the very top in July and finished the Danskin triathlon in August.

Which would you think is harder, climbing Mount Rainier, or doing the Danskin triathlon (half-mile swim, 12.4-mile bike, 3.1-mile run)?

The answer probably depends on the person deciding to do it.

It's true that Mount Rainier was tough. There were the weekend snowshoeing trips and hikes up and down Mt Si with increasing levels of weight in the pack.
