Conflict of interest concerns raised

Groundbreaking for Burien's long-awaited Town Square earlier this month heralded the advent of construction on a project city leaders hope will energize local business activity.

Yet even before work begins, discord along Southwest 152nd Street, which runs past the Town Square site, threatens to fracture the downtown business community.

The focus of this unrest is Debra George, executive director of the Discover Burien Association, organized in 2002 to promote both the city and its businesses.

But some downtown restaurant owners say that since last spring, Georg

Maintenance is lazy gardening key

Not only is fall prime time for planting and transplanting garden denizens, it's also the ideal season for maintenance chores. The weather is cooler and the days are shorter, so not only is major work more comfortable, you get to go inside sooner for an evening libation.

What needs to be done and how to do it would fill garden advice columns to the loss of all else. Fortunately, people write books about these things.

Appearance of conflict hurts Discover Burien

A house divided against itself can not stand.

Abraham Lincoln

Discover Burien was organized with fanfare four years ago, absorbing the still-young Merchants of Burien in the process.

Its stated mission (see www.DiscoverBurien.com) includes promoting local economic development and business recruitment and retention.

"We work with Burien businesses to find solutions to their problems," the statement adds.

Yet in recent weeks, rumors have surfaced that suggest the Merchants of Burien might be resurrected to represent a growing number of disgr

Friends remember "Bubba"

Edward Michael Costello II called West Seattle his home because all his friends live here.

Mike was known to everyone as Bubba. He moved to Washington State in the early 1960s. As a young man he played football at Everett Junior College. As the Viet Nam war escalated he became a merchant seaman. When containers became a shipping industry standard he worked for the Sealand Corporation. Mike shipped out and sailed the globe for many years.

Wildcat women finish season 6-4

The West Seattle High School Women's Volleyball squad finished the regular season this week with a 6-4 record in the Sound division of the 3A Metro League.

Last Wednesday's match at the Ingraham Rams was for a chance at second place in the division and an automatic bid into the District playoff tournament. The Wildcats came out hot winning the first point and behind good serves by Gail Considine led 4-2 early.

The teams traded points until Ingraham put together a 7 point service run to lead 12-7.

Cross Country - Blood, sweat and cheers

Mission accomplished.

By the narrow score of 262 to 265, the West Seattle High School boys' cross country team surpassed Ingraham for eighth place in the Metro League.

The boys were a 10th place team when coaches Annette and Christopher Silvernale took over in 2005. That first year saw their team improve to ninth. Then last Thursday, sophomore Kyle MacDonald led the '06 harriers up one more rung. MacDonald finished 39th in 18:42, followed by Jacob Nauss, 51st in 19:50; Cooper Sinai-Yunker, 55th in 20:07; Jack Hilton, 56th in 20:32; and Chandler Sapp, 61st in 22:37.

In Transition - The 'Tell Someone' campaign

Each year 9,700 women in the United States are diagnosed with cervical cancer, a possibly deadly cancer of the lower end of the uterus or womb. It is caused by certain types of Human Papilloma virus (HPV) that can cause cells in the lining of the cervix to morph into precancerous lesions. If left untreated, these lesions can turn cancerous and result in death. Now it is almost entirely preventable.

In the year 2006, it is predicted that 9,710 women will be diagnosed with invasive cervical cancer, and some doctors predict that non-invasive cervical cancer is four times more common.
