The viaduct tab

We aren't sure whether we should be laughing or crying at the latest bit of research that tells us that it will cost our economy $2 billion a year while the Alaskan Way Viaduct is closed and being rebuilt or replaced.

That cost will come because people can't get downtown to eat, shop and even to work - at least in an efficient manner.

The study, paid for by businesses and some non-profits, says the cost to the retail core will be about $768 million a year.

Economic and personal freedom missing in N. Korea

Governor Gregoire's recent trade mission to South Korea and Taiwan should remind us all that economic freedom and personal freedom are inseparable.

Just compare North and South Korea.

North Korea is a grim, closed Communist dictatorship. No private enterprise is allowed and there is no free flow of information. While the government focuses on military spending and nuclear weapons, the nation's industrial sector and infrastructure have been neglected for decades and are virtually beyond repair.

Viewlands merger still expected

Seattle Public Schools Superintendent Raj Manhas has announced he will step down next summer as the district's leader, in part because he feels his work is done.

Meanwhile, the merger of Viewlands and Broadview-Thomson will go forward.

At a press conference last month, Manhas said his decision was personal.

"I believe I have fulfilled my responsibilities as superintendent and have accomplished much during my tenure..." he said.

Last year, a short-term School Board's advisory committee formed to develop a definition for alternative education because, although alternative schools have been in the district since

Food Bank gets driveway

A new driveway is going in at the Ballard Food Bank and the forklift drivers won't miss the slipping and sliding they've put up for years.

The old driveway was steep with cracks that caught the wheels of the forklifts. Small smooth rocks embedded in the old concrete made it too slick when wet. Because of the slope, the forklifts had to back up and make a running start to get up the incline.

One client was carrying a box of food and slipped.
