Lazy Gardener - Plant now after wet weather

A couple days of the deep freeze could have severely damaged gardens across Puget Sound. Below 20 degrees is not normal for the region. Plants on the edge of hardiness and those hardy in less severe Zone 8 winters may have suffered.

But don't get out and chop things willy-nilly. It will be necessary to wait until spring to assess the full effects of the November deep freeze. Fortunately, it was only a couple days.

At The Admiral - 'Little Miss Sunshine' has heart

Welcome to the dinner table of the Hoovers, a cluttered affair with a tub of take-out fried chicken tossed in the center along with a bottle of Sprite and paper plates scattered around the edges.

If it's not quite Martha Stewart's idea middle-class bliss, well neither are its occupants. The teenage son, Dwayne (Paul Dano), is a sullen Nietze acolyte who has taken a vow of silence until he gets into the Air Force Academy. His uncle Frank (Steve Carell), a Proust scholar, is recovering from a suicide attempt made in the throws of a broken love affair.

Other Voices - Our car makers failed us

A new movie called "Who Killed The Electric Car" seemed like a good movie to watch after enduring Al Gore's "An Inconvenient Truth." That movie was so depressing I wanted to shut off the power at the breaker box and sit in my dark, cold house in shame for being a member of the human species.

Even though it's no fun to be scolded, it's an important film to see, especially for young people, because they will be saddled with the decisions we make today. This new documentary with a somewhat jocular title, sounded like it might have a little comic relief.

Steve Cox was no ordinary cop

Deputy Cox defined the model of community policing. In the two years that we have operated Caf/ Rozella, in the heart of White Center, we had multiple interactions with him.

Almost single-handedly, Cox gave us and our patrons a sense of security that no amount of policing would have done. When we had issues, drug-dealing, prostitution, violence, Cox would respond immediately. So attuned was he to the community that he gave us his direct cell-phone number to call him should issues arise. Issues did arise and Cox never hesitated to try get at the root of the problem.

Remembering Steve Cox

I remember Officer Cox, stopping me in White Center one day. I was using a friend's car coming home from church. I am a pastor he was so nice to tell me the lights were out in the back of the car. I didn't know, he ran my license plate and driver's license when he approached the car, I asked him if I can get out and look, and he said yes.

I didn't receive a ticket - he told me I needed to get it fixed so I would not be stopped for lights blown out and receive a ticket.

Step in for our schools

With our public education system in such disarray, it is really a surprise that parents are voting with their feet and taking their kids out of our public schools?

Because of the so-called education reform efforts that commenced in 1993, we have an education system geared toward the Washington Assessment of Student Learning, or WASL test. That test does not assess social studies, the arts, or physical education, so these subjects are not emphasized in our schools. Gov.

Where is Seattle Lutheran sports?

Since I did not see an editor for your sports section I am directing this question to you, please feel free to pass it to the appropriate person if you are not the one this question should be presented to.

I am a long time subscriber of the Herald and in the past this wasn't an issue, but I have noticed that the West Seattle Herald has not reported any news on the sporting events, players, or teams of Seattle Lutheran High School and I'd like to know why?

All this past fall during soccer, cross country, and football season there has not been one story, picture, stats repo

A Christmas Gift

I thought I would take a moment and send you off an email that touched on the holidays.

My family has a long history in the West Seattle area, my siblings and I, as did my parents and grandparents all graduated from West Seattle High School. And my great grandma Gertrude Fredling was a daughter of the pioneers.

I now live and raise my family in Rochester, Wash., where houses are not so close together. And I really enjoy that except for when it is the holiday season.

Op-Ed - Success in Seattle public schools

Like sticky flypaper. As soon as you get your foot unstuck from one issue, you get stuck on the very next step.

Improving schools is sticky business. There's no simple solution, and with every proposal, everybody who ever went to school provides their expert opinion.

But that's the way it should be. Our kids are complex beings, with different backgrounds, interests and learning styles, and everybody should care about their current and future success.

Remembering Steve Cox

It is "gonna take five guys to replace him," were the words of one man.

The 6 o'clock peal of bells from Holy Family Church a few blocks away provided a somber backdrop to a vigil and prayer service a few blocks away in honor of slain White Center Deputy Sheriff Steve Cox. See photos on Page B-1.

In downtown White Center, about 200 people gathered on 16th Avenue Southwest last Friday in front of the White Center Sheriff and Community Service Center in quiet remembrance.
