Successful brew pub is heading south to Burien

Todd Carden has been eying Burien for years.

Now, the co-owner of Elliot Bay Brewery and Pub in West Seattle is expanding his business to the south.

A new, larger brew house and restaurant will open in early 2007 at 255 S.W.152nd Street and will offer an expanded selection of the award-winning beer the restaurant is known for.

"We've been keeping our eye on Burien for a while," Carden said.

Recovering from the storm

Tragedy struck a Burien family last week as the region recovered slowly from the Dec. 14-15 windstorm that downed power lines and left 1.5 million people shivering in the dark.

Khanh Tran, 46; his wife, Dan Thuy Nguyen, 44; and two sons, 21-year-old Quyen Tran and 14-year-old John Quoc Tran, were found dead in their north Burien home on Dec. 18, the victims of carbon monoxide poisoning.

A third son, Doanh Tran, 24, was in critical condition at Harborview Medical Center.

Burien debated annexation

The debate over whether Burien should annex North Highline dominated local news in 2006.

However, plenty of other important events occurred throughout the year.

Here's a month-by-month review of what made news in Highline communities this year:

January

Burien City Manager Gary Long, who retired after losing the support of the new council majority, warned that the North Highline annexation decision is "as important as the decision the voters made to incorporate in 1993."

Lights wasted tax dollars

When many households were still affected by the recent electrical outage we all devised many different ways trying to stay warm. What is concerning is to observe King County's Evergreen athletic soccer fields floodlights operating.

Driving by the fields we found not one person using the fields during this critical time.

Our question: is this our tax dollars at work?

Full, partial, no annexation? That was the year that was

I am the editor, and you're not, so I get to arbitrarily pick the top ten Highline stories of 2006.

1. Burien officials struggle all year over North Highline annexation, while an organized citizen's group lobbies hard against it.

Burien council members began the new year by inviting Seattle to sit down and talk about an annexation solution.

No kraut when lights went out

"Where was Mother when the lights went out?

"Down in the cellar eating sauerkraut.

"Where was Mother when the lights went out?

"Down in the cellar eating sauerkraut."

I don't know where my Mom got that but it was a bromide we heard frequently growing up.

In those days the lights went out frequently because the power company in Portland kept turning them off and my Pop kept turning them back on again as soon as the light company man was out of sight.
