Police beats reorganized

The Seattle Police Department mapped out new patrol beats for West Seattle and the rest of the city along with plans to beef-up the number of police officers on duty Friday and Saturday nights and during summer, when criminal activity is higher.

The change would mean West Seattle and South Park would be carved into six patrol beats instead of the current seven. Police officials want the flexibility to put more officers on the street where and when needed.

Under the existing system, the city is divided into 64 patrol beats.

Viaduct shows no added settlement

Inspection results show no additional settlement of the Alaskan Way Viaduct between Columbia Street and Yesler Way.

However, due to half an inch of settlement at two piers found during previous inspections over the last year, the Washington State Department of Transportation will move forward with repairs in this area.

"We are pleased with the results of this inspection, but the situation is still urgent," said Jugesh Kapur, state bridge engineer.

Correction

An article in the March 28 edition erroneously stated that all northbound lanes of I-5 will be closed for a couple of weeks in August.

The repair work on the stretch of I-5 from Spokane Street northward to the I-90 interchange will be done between Aug. 10 and Aug. 29. At least two northbound lanes will remain open at all times. There will be no time during which all lanes will be closed.

Traffic will be restricted to one lane at night, when much of the work is to be done.

Some work also is planned for the southbound lanes of I-5.

Jerry's View - The golf mud trap

So sunny, so nice, so Elsbeth offered to ride with me if I wanted to go out for nine holes of hit and hunt golf. The winter has been so long I was pretty excited.

The sign said carts stay on paths so there was a lot of walking and the course was wonderful but the rough was very deep. If you bent one too much you often could not find it.

My first game in a year was not pretty but I got a lot of exercise.

We did have to call the clubhouse only once.

After a sterling drive that accidentally hit a limb my ball dove into knee deep grass.
