Teachers should take WASL exam, too

Why doggedly insist students go down with the ship?

State Sen. Cheryl Pflug

R-Maple Valley

Too many students in our state fail the math and science portions of the Washington Assessment of Student Learning (WASL) exam.

And as legislators neared the end of their current session late last week, they appeared ready to delay the math and science requirements for four years.

But, Sen. Pflug observed last year, "Graduating without skills is not OK."

Key transportation meeting

After waiting almost two years, citizens of Puget Sound are invited to the Washington State Department of Transportation workshop to review the work product to date. This very important study has been needed by our region for a long time, even before the decision to construct the third runway.

It was hard to get the study funded in 2005 by legislation co-sponsored by Sen. Karen Keiser, D-Des Moines.

Democrats governing well

After reading Ralph Nichols' April 11 opinion piece, I had a real hankering for some Flock of Seagulls music.

You may remember the band as a one-hit wonder from the 1980s, with the song "I Ran So Far Away." In my circle, they were known more for the lead singer's poofy hair than for their music.

I had the 80s flashback because it seemed like Ralph was quoting 1980s Republican rhetoric, instead of clearly seeing the reality in 2007. He quotes only conservative think tanks and GOP party leaders.

Editor's column countered

Au contraire Mister Mathison, Editor of the Highline Times. Your column affirmed rather than made the case against Ralph Nichol's comments.

For a clue read the article "Burien Council looks at transportation taxes" in which they are concerned that fees will drive up the cost of development and the price of homes. Raising the cost on homes raises rent, too.

Extolling the virtues of the Democrat Party as vote getters doesn't mean it is good for the State or the future of our young people.
