Nurse struggled to reach status at Swedish Ballard

When Lily Saini moved to Seattle 33 years ago, the nursing degrees she earned in India were not transferable. Instead of giving up, she worked hard and eventually became a Licensed Practical Nurse at Swedish Medical Center in Ballard.

"I heard America had a lot of opportunities for registered nurses. It was very hard. I was a big shot in my country," she said.

Saini went to work for various agencies as a Certified Nursing Assistant before finally being recognized as an LPN. Saini joined the staff of Swedish in 1980.

From couch potatoes to walkers

Nancy and David Morton are training for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Three-Day Walk coming in September. The Mortons have been walking from their Loyal Heights home to Green Lake and back, a round trip of 10.5 miles each weekend. On weekdays they walk to downtown and back. "I'm doing it because my mom died of ovarian cancer. I saw her suffer for two years," Nancy said. The Morton's had another incentive. "We were complete couch potatoes," said Nancy. "My health was not good. I have diabetes. I felt I needed a change in my life." Dean Wong photo.

Beginning a dialogue on citizen complaints

In looking for a professional consultant with police survey experience, I found that while police officer opinion surveys are common, less than half a dozen in the nation have focused on their attitudes toward civil

Denny's goes in early '08

A long tradition of comfort food and 24-hour service that has served generations will end by early 2008 as the wrecking ball comes crashing down on Denny's restaurant to make way for a six-story condominium.

Rhapsody Partners purchased the property at 15th Avenue Northwest and Northwest Market Street from the failed Seattle Monorail Project. They plan to build the 60,000 square foot, 250-unit Ballard Commons on the property.

According to the Oct. 3, 1984 issue of the News-Tribune, Denny's opened its door at one minute after mid-night on Oct. 2 of that year.
