'Dummy' passenger nets

ticket for dummy driver

November 30-A dummy placed in a car's passenger seat as a decoy for driving in freeway car-pool (HOV) lanes didn't fool a Washington State Patrol trooper.

As the car headed north at 7:55 a.m. on Interstate 5 at Kent-Des Moines Road, the trooper noticed the "passenger" didn't appear lifelike, and stopped the 27-year-old driver from Olalla.

He got a $124 ticket for violating the restricted lane.

Rams ring in the new season with a victory over Tyee

The Mount Rainier Rams rang in the league season like a team about to do big things again in the Seamount wrestling ranks, going for a fourth in a row dual meet league championship -- starting off it's season with a pointedly easy victory, pinning Tyee to the canvas, again, and again, and again, for a 72-5 home win Thursday.

"This was our first league meet," said Rams head coach Frank Brandt.

Pins were the main point of conversation in this one, besides the overall score.

Highline football coach resigns

Health issues have forced Mike Brown to resign as football coach at Highline after three seasons.

"I wouldn't walk away from these kids if I had a choice," he said.

Brown, 64, made significant strides with a program that was on an 0-20 streak before he took over. The Pirates were winless again his first season, giving them a 29-game losing streak, longest in the state. But they opened with a 32-6 victory over Vashon in 2006 and finished 4-6.

Mudslide moves residents out

About 20 residents of the Shorewood neighborhood were forced from their homes Dec. 4 after a landslide pushed a wall of mud onto the street that provides access to their property.

Eight homes were evacuated.

According to North Highline Fire Chief Scott LaVielle, 11 homes were "yellow-tagged" and two were "red-tagged" in the residential neighborhood that features views of Puget Sound and Vashon Island.

City of Burien staff tagged the homes with yellow tags if they were safe for limited access.

Wide area is served by White Center Food Bank

Every month, approximately 1,200 families visit the White Center Food Bank.

Many of those who walk through the doors are hard workers who do not have enough food to make it through the month-single parents, immigrants, and non-English speaking people.

One look around and it is obvious that this is not your typical food bank.

The White Center Food Bank operates from a unique "no questions asked" perspective. People do not have to prove income. They do, however, have to reside in the service area.

Located at 10829 Eighth Ave. S.W.
