Tax claims amuse writer

Rep. Shay Schual-Berke, M.D.'s letter in your December 12, 2007, edition of the Times/News amused me.

After methodically destroying I-601 (an initiative from the people codified in law) in concert with other Democrat legislators, Schual-Berke got religion and voted to reinstate I-747, an initiative from the people to restore the provisions of I-601.

Further, Schual-Berke states she voted for I-747 even though it went against her personal preference and by extension against the will of the people.

Yes, Virginia, Congress should focus on big issues, not McDermott and Christmas

When I read about U.S. Rep. Jim McDermott's "vote against Christmas," my immediate reaction was, "Oh, oh, here comes another Ralph Nichols rant."

Sure enough, the lead item in his next column ran under the headline, "Time for McDermott to leave after disrespecting Christmas, Christians."

McDermott had voted against a resolution to recognize the importance of Christmas and Christianity.

Never underestimate Barbara Reamer

Meet Barbara Reamer

Chances are you have already met her because she is ubiquitous in the Highline area. If there is a cause she will appear out of nowhere to help improve something or build something or use her livewire style and impish grin just doing good.

Long may she live because successful, vital communities need lots of her skills and energy.

I met her way back in the fifties when she was a secretary to John Mowbray, owner of Highline's first radio station, KQIN.

Vet hangs up stethoscope after 40 years

Dr. Larry King likes animals, and he likes medicine.

He decided that becoming a veterinarian would be a "good combination" of these two passions, and so upon graduating from Colorado State University, King joined the Lien Animal Clinic in West Seattle. That was almost 40 years ago.

On New Year's Eve King will be retiring from his post at the family-owned animal hospital. He has been with Lien Animal since 1968, and owned the clinic for 19 years with his wife, Connie.

Don't blame McDermott

In response to Ron Marshall's letter of Dec. 19, Jim McDermott is not why Congress has a lower approval rating than President Bush.

The reason Congress has such a low approval rating is because of their refusal to do what they were given a mandate to do in November of 2006, and that is to end the illegal occupation of Iraq. Rep McDermott is one of a handful of Democrats, which include Rep. Dennis Kucinich, who have from the start been against the invasion.

We need facts, ideas

A new year usually brings new beginnings, fresh ideas and hope that the world will become a better place.

Maybe not this year.

We can have all those good things, but with it must we continue the constant babble of political candidates squabbling like errant school children? What happened to real debate over real problems? Some of the older generation reading this may wonder what we are talking about because politics was always a dust-up and finger pointing.
