Master griller Aakervik on duty for 33 years

The biggest party of the year, the Ballard SeafoodFest, is this weekend and thousands of people are expected to come enjoy the entertainment, children's events, booths and the famous salmon barbecue.

Warren Aakervik, president of Ballard Oil has been the master griller behind the salmon meals for the last 33 years.

Two-way Mercer draws fire

After four decades of dispute over the "Mercer Mess" Seattle's community members continue to debate the best way to address problems with the corridor.

While eight members of the Seattle City Council support a $193 million "Two-Way Mercer Project," council member Nick Licata has voiced his opposition to the project and persuaded three different community groups to do the same.

"The project hasn't been looked at very closely," Licata said.

Bottled water under local fire

Mayor Greg Nickels signed an executive order in March to end the city's practice of buying bottled water for city employees and for public events because he said Seattle's water is reported to be "amongst the best in any major city in North America."

Seattle Public Utilities regularly tests its water for 179 compounds including metals, chemical contaminants and disease-causing organisms.

Soundview takes two

Soundview won its first two games at the Junior Little League age 13 state baseball tournament held at Skagit Valley Community College.

The Northeast Tacoma team opened with a 6-5 victory over Rainier Valley and followed it up with an 11-2 victory over Bellevue West.

Soundview was prepared to play in the winner’s final after press time Friday.

Masters times offered

The Federal Way Masters swimming team for ages 19 and over is now offering three workout session times at the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center l

Seniors find fast way to reach final

Sky Valley was Steel Lake' s first victim in the Senior All Stars Little League State Tournament.

Steel Lake erased a 1-0 deficit early on to support Travis Quackenbush's good in the end, when it mattered most, winning an extra inning game, 5-1, July 13 at Moshier Field in Burien.

"I think we have state in the bag," said Quackenbush, who started off the game allowing three straight singles, including the third hit having an RBI, before ducking trouble the rest of the game, including striking out the final two batters in the first inning.( Quack

Steel Lake's "mojo" leads the way toward title

AUBURN-Steel Lake had its "Mojo" in motion to the tune of a title on Sunday, July 13 at Sunset Park.

Backed by solid defense, Mikey (Mojo) Mojica batted and pitched the Steel Lake All stars to a 4-1 if-necessary championship game victory at the 2008 Washington Majors (ages 11-12) District 10 Little League baseball tournament.

"We beat the giant," exclaimed SL manager Richard Price. "Kent was the two-time state champion."With Jake Koeltrman injured, everybody stepped it up. Everybody contributed.
