Kohl-Welles seeks youth hunting curbs

Sen. Jeanne Kohl-Welles, D-Seattle, is looking into potential fixes to state law that could prevent tragedies such as that of the recent shooting of a grandmother hiking in the North Cascades by a 14-year old hunter.

"When teens had higher accident and fatality rates than other drivers, the Legislature created graduated driver's licenses so teens could become safer and better drivers," Kohl-Welles said. "I'm working with Senate staff attorneys to determine the merits of creating a similar program for hunting.

250 Phinney homeless fed in church

As early as 9 a.m. the smell of baked chicken, fresh egg salad, bubbling turkey-vegetable soup and the vast amounts of colorful fruits and vegetables waft out of Phinney Ridge's St. John's United Lutheran Church kitchen. Makes one wonder what's the occasion for all these great smells every Monday and Wednesday afternoon.

There's only one explanation, the Phinney Neighborhood Association's Soup Kitchen Program.

Green Task Force created by Seattle

The city has created the Green Building Task Force, an advisory panel that will provide recommendations to make homes and businesses more energy efficient and climate-friendly.

Over the next six months, the task force will provide feedback to the city on a range of policies and programs that could later influence executive orders, legislation and departmental actions.

Fall sports set for Ballard High

By Michael Harthorne

Boys' Tennis

The boys' tennis team is going to have a different look this year due to the loss of many seniors and the addition of a lot of younger players, said coach Brad Hamilton.

Only in some bottles

In response to your recent post on Aug. 5, "Let's Talk Going Green," I wanted to clarify that BPA is found in polycarbonate bottles, not all plastic containers. Many stories on the topic omit this important point.

Reading stories about the recent BPA debate, I have noticed that many reporters omit the fact that most single-serve plastic bottles - such as those for water, soft drinks and juices - are made with polyethylene terephthalate (PET), designated by the recycling symbol "1," which does not contain BPA.

There may be some good news about education in the area!

In nearby Lakewood people have gone to the City Council, not the School Board, to complain about the Clover Park School District.

Why might this be good news?

Evidently some of the residents of Lakewood have realized that the schools are not doing justice to the community.

Looking at some of the views expressed, it would appear that some of these concerns are coming from parents of children who have been exposed to the Department of Defense Dependent Schools (DODDS).

This school system is highly regarded in most educational circles.
