Al Sneed recalls Merrill Bell and Bell's of Burien

Al Sneed was the owner of the Highline Times from 1955 till Jerry Robinson bought it from him in 1974. He is now retired living in Enumclaw and is collaborating with Jerry on a book about the history of this newspaper. From time to time we will bring you tidbits of the early years, This is from Al Sneed.

I can't believe that Al Sneed told me, "We need you"...Merrill Bell.

There were four business leaders, in Burien, for whom I had the utmost respect. They were Joe Jaffe, Leo Thomas, Vin Menella, and Merrill Bell.

Communication is such a key part of being able to correctly repair your car and good communication may even save you money in the diagnosis. The trick is to not tell the service writer what you think isn't working correctly, but what is happening.

Matador food not to change

After a drawn out trial in which Peso's Kitchen and Lounge founder Brian Hutmacher sued the Matador for trade dress infringement, the restaurant chain is pleased with the settlement reached and happy to reassure customers that they won't notice too many changes.

"We felt great at the end of the day," said Zak Menlang, one of the Matador's founders.

Admiral Neighborhood Association meeting Tuesday night

The Admiral group will meet at 7 p.m. at the Admiral Congregational United Church of Christ, 4320 S.W. Hill St. Nov. 11, to discuss various community issues, including a new park in the area.

Also on the agenda; a report from Jim Del Ciello on the happenings with the Southwest District Council; election of a new Admiral Neighborhood Association board; a review of emergency preparedness; and an update on the process of the California Place Park, which is in the design phase.

West Seattle developments

The following information has been compiled from the Seattle Department of Planning and Development, which develops, administers, and enforces standards for land use, design, construction, and housing within the city. The department is also responsible for long-range planning in Seattle. It also works in conjunction with appointed volunteer design boards across the city that reviews private development projects. Only commercial and multi-family developments that exceed a certain size threshold in certain land use zones are reviewed.

Schools to host public meetings on new Student Assignment Plan

For the next three months, Seattle Public Schools will hold a series of public meetings to discuss a new district-wide Student Assignment Plan.

Parents asked to pledge "alcohol/drug free" homes

The Southwest Healthy Youth Partnership wants parents to help combat the use of alcohol in middle school students.

As part of a multi-pronged campaign, the coalition will begin distributing a voluntary "Alcohol and Drug Free Homes Parent Pledge" to parents of Madison Middle School students.

"By signing the pledge, parents let others in the community know that they intend to supervise and monitor their child's social activities," said Renae T.
