Will "Kumbaya" improve the achievement levels of the students in Federal Way and the rest of the State?

Apparently the state, using your tax dollars, believes that "developing better relationships between students" will help to bring up our dismal achievement scores.

The state has "invested" in a program from the Anti-Defamation League that is designed to make children more comfortable among themselves in school.

Recently the School Board had an orientation session on this program.

Feeling good about new year

Tonight is New Year's Eve and once again we plan to celebrate it with riotous abandon.

As usual, Elsbeth and I will each find a metal pot from the kitchen and a wooden ladle or spoon from the kitchen drawer and at the stroke of midnight we will totter outside to the front yard and bang on the pots like crazy people and shout Happy New Year to the neighbors and any others who might by chance be passing by on our dead end street.

We have much to celebrate.

Number one is our survival amid the greatest glut of bad news we have ever heard.

CEO turns into polar bear

A group of local men and woman gather in their swim attire on a January day. Standing on the rocky winter beach of Three Tree Point they begin the countdown.

A voice yells, "...4, 3, 2, 1!" and everyone runs straight for the frigid Puget Sound water. The rush of cold over their bodies as each one submerges themselves fully and rises back to the surface is heard in a mix of screams and laughter. Shaking and smiling they come together on the beach for a post-swim photo.

As they stand on the beach wrapped in towels one of the men says, "I feel great!

Why do smart people believe Port?

RE: "Residents not toasting runway," Times/News Dec. 17.

Good article but I truly do not understand why smart people like Mayor Sheckler would believe the Port of Seattle on anything having to do with the airport.

The Port has continually misled people.

When they expanded the runway across 188th it was supposed to the last runway expansion.

The Port will not be satisfied until they can rival O'Hare and pave over half of Burien.

Just look at the Port's current and past performance.
