Ballard rebounds for win

On April 12, four days after a 1-13 dismantling at the hands of Issaquah, the Ballard High School baseball team recovered for a 4-2 win over Redmond.

The Beavers scored in the top of the first inning and never trailed on their way to their third victory of the season.

Ballard as a team looked sharp, finishing with seven hits and only one error. More importantly, it was able to convert those hits into runs, a problem that has plagued the team lately.

Freshman Rory Graf-Brennen led the way offensively, going two-for-three with two RBIs, a home run and a run scored.

Senior pitcher Ryan Garrett threw eight strikeouts and four walks in just more than six innings of work.

Ballard is 3-5 in KingCo and 3-7 overall. The team has won two of its last three games.

Next up for the Beavers is Skyline at 3:45 p.m. on April 14 at Whitman Middle School.

Are there any “Bad Schools” in Washington?

Parents beware!

Are there any “Bad Schools” in Washington?

If you were to listen to school administrations in this state you would think that there were not! The Obama administration has now required all states to identify the bottom 5% of their schools as “In need of improvement.”

Since this state is listed as 43rd out of 51, DC is counted as a state in this survey, based on high school completion it would suggest that if you are in the bottom 5% of the schools you could be labeled as “Bad” in my opinion. In fact I would suggest that being in the bottom 50% of Washington’s schools might be “Bad” if the schools were measured against all of the nation’s schools.

While we have heard, in the Federal Way School District, that “All of our schools are good” we only have to look at a nearby district to find two middle schools that have made the list of schools “In need of improvement.” Some of our middle schools are not that much better.

Looking at the web-sites of these schools I find the following descriptions of the advantages of these schools:’

Artist finds his passion in Ballard

By Karen Law

As a farm boy growing up in the small town of Litchfield, Minn., one of Nate Stottrup's favorite ways to relax after chores and school was to reach for a comic book or graphic novel.

Little did he know one day he'd be teaching and crafting equally creative images of his own at Sev Shoon Arts Center in Ballard or that he would think up an idea which would be turned into a strategy game for Dilbert, one of the comic world's most recognized characters.

“The comic books were the spark,” Stottrup said about his artistic beginnings. “Something about the form of the images and their movement and exaggeration appealed to me. I started to draw from them.”

Farm chores may have kept him busy, but he was fortunate enough to have parents who appreciated and encouraged his creativity and an art teacher in high school who mentored his abilities.

Deciding to pursue art in college, Stottrup first took up graphic design then switched to photography. But, he discovered that while he loved the process of photography, he missed the hands-on creating and drawing of images.

It was literally an accident that led him to find his true passion.

Greenwood parade will celebrate neighborhood's talent

The Greenwood-Phinney Chamber of Commerce is celebrating the community’s various talents this summer as it honors The Coats, a local a cappella group with a national reputation, as the grand marshals of the 60th annual Greenwood Seafair Parade July 28.

The theme for this year is Greenwood’s Got Talent, Celebrating 60 Super Summers.

“I think with The Coats leading off our parade, we can focus on some of the great talent in our community and let them show their stuff in the parade,” parade chair Ann Woodward said in a press release. “Getting out there and performing, whether it is singing, dancing, fitness training, playing an instrument, gardening or whatever, is an excellent ways to exercise your mind and body, have fun and stay healthy.”

The Coats started their career on the street corners of Seattle, which evolved into a full-time international performance career. They have won national vocal competitions.

The Greenwood Seafair Parade takes place from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on July 28.
