Reality Mom: Other People’s Boyfriends

I recently read a quote in Safekeeping by Abigail Thomas along the lines of “eventually, every woman fools around with a married man.” I am the exception to this rule. It’s not necessarily a moralistic thing (if people are going to cheat, they’re going to cheat, who am I to stop them?), but rather a headache thing. As in, who needs it? I’ve lived my life thus far avoiding any Glenn Close types cooking my bunny rabbit and I prefer to keep it that way.

With married men clearly in the “no” category, I assumed determining the difference between available and unavailable would be pretty easy. When my married friends started pimping their male friends to me I resisted at first. I was eventually swayed by all of his glowing attributes and the assumption that as long as it wasn’t their husbands who were being pimped, I was probably safe. As soon as I would agree to meet the man, the pimping stopped and the topic would be avoided. When pressed, the friend admitted she didn’t want to share her backup boyfriend. This happened not once, but three times. And I thought my single friends were the promiscuous ones.

Evergreen girls take third at state

SUMNER--If anyone had a reason to be upset that the Evergreen Lutheran girls soccer season went all the way to the state "final four", it was Eagle girls basketball coach Jeff Kurbis.

After all, his team was still missing players since practices started Nov. 15.

But he was smiling as he stood looking out at the Sunset Chev Stadium turf after the Eagles finished third with a 3-1 win over Warden of Eastern Washington.

"Tryouts were Monday, but half of my team is right here," Kurbis said. "I don't mind."

The faithful from the Class 2B school located in the Woodmont area where Federal Way and Des Moines converge seemed happy that their team captured the third place trophy with the consolation final win after losing to Napavine of Eastern Washington by a 2-0 score the day before.

Evergreen Lutheran came out strong in the Saturday, Nov. 20 game against the Warden Cougars, but did not score until 35 minutes, 23 seconds remained on the second half clock.

Megume Poetter broke the ice at that time, working her way up close to the net and putting the ball into the left side of the goal netting.

The Winter Beer Guide

The temperatures are dropping, trees are standing bare and snow is falling. Winter season is here which means it’s time for winter ales. Winter brings out unique small-production seasonal brews called winter warmers. There are no specific rules for how these beers should be brewed but winter warmers are typically malty, complex and higher in alcohol. Some have spice or fruit characteristics, others are flavored with chocolate or vanilla.
In the Northwest, we are fortunate to be surrounded by many breweries so the winter beer selection is plentiful. BNT visited a few beer experts in Ballard and Fremont to hear their take on winter beer.

Hale’s Ales

Hale’s Ales’ featured winter beer is the Wee Heavy, which was first introduced in 1985.
The Wee Heavy is a mahogany colored beer with a complex hops, caramel, nut and roast flavor.
“We play around with the recipe a little bit each year,” said Dave Seiler, who has been a commercial brewer for five years and has been with Hales Ales for two years.
This year they added a bit more roast flavor, he said.
