UPDATE: Friends and relatives gather to plan a vigil for Jeremy Peck

Last seen at 1:30 am Dec. 24, the search effort for the missing man grows

A planning meeting for a vigil for Jeremy Peck, the 24 year old West Seattle resident, missing now for more than three weeks was held at the Chelan Cafe on Tuesday, Jan. 18. One fact that was initially mis-stated was the exact date of his disappearance. Peck was last seen Dec. 24 at approximately 1:30 am. He had been at area bars the evening of Dec. 23.

The vigil itself is set for next Sunday, Jan. 23 at 4:30 pm outside the Admiral Pub where he was seen last at 2306 California Avenue s.w.

14 people, including friends and relatives like Jeremy's 3 year old niece Tylar, the daughter of his sister Bobbi Jo, came to the cafe to talk over ideas for the vigil and ways to keep the search for Peck going.

Ben Doty, a friend of Peck's since they were 10 year olds and who graduated with him from West Seattle High School in 2005 is the vigil director.
"Jeremy is just a sweet mellow kid," said Ben, recalling that they played basketball together with John Peck, Jeremy's uncle as their coach.

Ambulance, a local Indie Rock band made up of three Ballard boys, will be rocking the stage at The EMP Sound Off! competition on February 12th.

The EMP Sound Off! is Northwest's largest underage battle of the bands and after submitting CDs for three years in a row, Ambulance finally get a chance to showcase their talent.

The competition supports the local underage music scene by giving young artists from different backgrounds a unique opportunity to showcase their work and connect with the larger artistic community.

Ambulance is a collaboration of Ballard High School senior Spencer Miller on bass and vocal, and BHS alumni Sam Peterson on the guitar and vocals and Dillon Christopher on the drums.

City awards nearly $23 million for affordable rental housing for seniors, working families and homeless individuals

Ballard's Nelson Manor to receive funding

The first rental housing awards from the voter-approved 2009 Seattle Housing Levy will create and preserve more than 650 affordable apartments throughout the city

The Office of Housing announced today that nearly $23 million in capital funding will go towards creating and preserving affordable housing. Divvied up amongst eight nonprofit housing developers, the investment will help create 375 new units for seniors, homeless individuals and low-income working families. It will also be used to rehabilitate another 291 apartments currently home to seniors and people with disabilities.

“Having housing throughout our community that is affordable to people from all walks of life, people with varying economic situations, is what makes our neighborhoods vibrant and inviting,” said Deputy Mayor Darryl Smith. “This funding will help hundreds of seniors and people with disabilities remain in their current homes, put roofs over the heads of so many who are currently living on the street, plus provide new opportunities for our hard-working, low- to moderate-wage neighbors.”

Judge Michael Heavey speaks at Rotary luncheon on Amanda Knox, Curt Knox attends

Superior Court judge for 10 years, Fauntleroy resident Michael Heavey, Sr. spoke on his own capacity (not judicial capacity) about the case of Amanda Knox which he has been following closely, at today's West Seattle Rotary Luncheon at Salty's on Alki. Amanda's father, Arbor Heights resident, Curt, attended as a guest.

Heavey served in the 34th District House of Representatives in 1986, then in this district's State Senate from 1994-2000. Governor, Gary Locke assigned Heavey to the bench Sept. 16, 2000. Heavey was a second lieutenant in the Vietnam War and received three medals including the Bronze Star.

Heavey's interest in the Knox case has been controversial. He was charged June 8 by the state Commission on Judicial Conduct for using court time, materials and employees to send three letters to prosecutors and a judge in Italy on the Knox case on County letterhead in 2008 while Knox was in prison awaiting trial.

Heavey told the West Seattle Herald last June, "A judge should not advance his private interest. I was not. I was advancing the interest of justice."
