SLIDESHOW: Eagle's nest near Salty's home to a beautiful couple

Photographer Kimberly Robinson took advantage of the sparse leaf growth on the trees that are home to a mating pair of bald eagles, across from Salty's at Alki.

According to an eagle focused website called www.baldeagleinfo.com, this is the time of year when they lay their eggs though this can vary, and this pair were highly focused on the nest, staying close to it. The incubation period is approximately 35 days. While it is the female that spends most of her time on the nest the male bald eagle regularly brings sprigs of conifer branches to the nest.

The site states that there are an estimated 7,066 nesting pairs of bald eagles.

West Seattle HS soccer pulls off 1-1 draw against Eastside Catholic

Friday, April 8 was an ideal day to be on the pitch playing a game of soccer at the Delridge Playfield as the WSHS varsity boys drew even against Eastside Catholic in a match that, on paper, had Eastside as the heavy favorite.

First half

Neither team was able to get much going in the first 30 minutes of the game with short stints of possession in the midfield for both squads.

The WSHS Wildcats depended heavily on the long ball in the first half but fell short of creating any solid chances as their strikers were consistently shut down by a smothering Eastside back line. Wildcat midfielders, such as Jonathan Delgado Quintana, displayed superior foot skills and were able to beat defenders one-on-one in the midfield, but the support was rarely there for anything but a long ball and a prayer.

The Wildcats took several shots from beyond the 18-yard line, testing Eastside’s goalkeeper who looked shaky at times but kept the ball out nonetheless.

Murder guilty verdict comes 15 years after Burien man’s disappearance

On the afternoon of April 6 a King County jury found Myron Wynn guilty of killing Bob Wykel, a Burien man who was 66 when he disappeared in February 1996.

Although Wykel’s body was never discovered, a mountain of circumstantial evidence was enough to convince the jury of Wynn’s guilt. This was the second trial for Wynn after a hung jury failed to come to a decision in December 2010.

The disappearance

Wykel, who was declared deceased in 2003 by the King County Medical Examiner, lived in Burien and spent most of his time purchasing, restoring and reselling classic cars after retiring as a sheet-metal worker, according to charging documents. He was known for always wearing a large diamond ring and never taking it off.

Around Feb. 21, 1996, Wykel told friends he was excited to check out a vintage Thunderbird an acquaintance had told him about. That acquaintance was Myron Wynn, who had “inserted himself into Wykel’s social group” who met at a Burien McDonald’s for morning coffee and good conversation. Wykel told a friend that Wynn had a line on a Thunderbird was being sold buy a soldier near Ft. Lewis.

West Seattle Be Prepared kicks off speaker series with Red Cross info

Earthquake preparedness was the main topic

Japan’s 9.0 earthquake on March 11 was a strong reminder to everyone in the Pacific Northwest of the geological features and propensity for a major earthquake we share.

In the first part of a series to inform West Seattleites on how to be prepared for a major disaster, West Seattle Be Prepared held a session on April 8 at the Senior Center – bringing in Kitsap/King County Red Cross officials to discuss how the Red Cross operates, disaster preparedness for the individual and families and a CPR/first aid training session.

Red Cross Emergency Response

Deb Ticknor, Red Cross Readiness Manager originally from West Seattle, took the floor first and explained how the Red Cross prepares for major disasters in our area as a crowd of 40-plus listened intently.

Ticknor said the array of emergencies the Red Cross could respond to in King and Kitsap Counties is large, from major natural disasters including earthquakes, flooding, tsunamis, volcanic eruptions and lahars (massive debris flow that can flow down from a volcano) to smaller, more common disasters like snow and wind storms and residential, industrial or multi-unit fires.
