June 2011

Update 2: Only 1 withdrawal in Highline council races

Diana Holman, who previously filed for Burien City Council Position 4, is the only Highline city council candidate to withdraw before the June 16 deadline. Holman cited family privacy concerns.
Her withdrawal leaves incumbent Gordon M. Shaw facing challengers Joey Martinez and Bob Edgar.
The other Burien council primary battle will be between incumbent Lucy Krakowiak, Greg Duff and Ed Dacy.
In SeaTac, Mayor Terry Anderson, Abdi Heibe and Sandra Cook-Bensley are running for Position 3.
Louise H. Strander, Ruth Sanoy and Kate Kruller are running for Tukwila City Council Position 6.
Tukwila Mayor Jim Haggerton, running for re-election, is opposed by Pamela Linder.
Nonpartisan positions, where fewer that three people filed, will not appear on the August primary ballot.
Two withdrawals for Port of Seattle commissioner posts mean the Port races will not be on the primary ballot. Michael Wolfe withdrew from the Position 2 race, leaving Richard Pope and incumbent Gael Tarleton. Will (Walkin' Will) Knedlik took himself out of the Position 5 Port race. Dean Willard and incumbent Bill Bryant will face off in the November general election.

UPDATE: North Highline Unincorporated Area Council facing full budget cut in 2012

Update: King County Council agrees to 'new model' for unincorporated areas

Update for July 11:

A King County press release dated July 11 said the council has agreed to a new model for interacting with the county's unincorporated areas. Part of the new model includes cutting funding to and contractual agreements with UACs (like the North Highline UAC that represents White Center and the surrounding area).

The press release stated, "The framework preserves the existing Community Service Centers that provide remote access to county services, as well as existing liaison staff for the UAC’s who would now serve as a single point of contact for residents. It also provides one-time transition funding to Unincorporated Area Councils. The Executive is scheduled to deliver a proposal to implement the Community Service Areas plan at the time he transmits the annual county budget to the Council in late September."

Here is the press release in its entirety:

Legislation creates new framework, implements broader outreach to unincorporated residents

Update: Boehm pleads guilty

Jayson Boehm pleaded guilty Thursday, June 9 to four counts of unlicensed practice of medicine, forgery and first-degree theft.

He could be sentenced to a maximum of 14 months in prison. His sentencing hearing is next month.

Boehm was charged by King County prosecutors in December of 2010, covered by the Highline Times here.

Boehm provided first aid at Highline School District games and provided first aid training to coaches and P.E. teachers. He also served as substitute stadium manager at Highline Memorial Field.

However, the state Department of Health charged that Boehm also conducted physical exams on more than two-dozen male and female students. Most of the exams were given to Evergreen High student athletes. Boehm was not licensed to give physicals.

He was also charged with falsifying forms to make it appear that they were signed by a physician. The school district fired Boehm after the allegations came to light. A school nurse reported to her supervisor that Boehm had provided a medical excuse for a student.
