King County Fire Marshal calls for Burn Ban starting this week

A county-wide fire safety burn ban is declared by the King County Fire Marshal in coordination with the King County Fire Chiefs’ Association. This ban is prompted by ground conditions and forecasts calling for continued dry weather.

This Phase 1 burn ban applies to all outdoor burning except for small recreational fires in established fire pits at approved camp grounds or private property with the owner’s permission. These fires must:

· Be built in a metal or concrete fire pit, such as those typically found in designated campgrounds;
· Grow no larger than three feet across;
· Be located in a clear spot free from any vegetation for at least 10 feet in a horizontal direction, including a 20-foot vertical clearance from overhanging branches; and
· Be attended at all times by an alert individual with immediate access to a shovel and either five gallons of water or a connected and charged water hose.
The use of gas and propane self-contained stoves and barbeques will continue to be allowed under the ban.

Promotion, parking, and pot were on the agenda of Aug. 8 WC Business District Mixer

The August 8 White Center Business District mixer held at the 3.14 Bakery covered a lot of ground in a short time with a strong reminder about a special day in the community Aug. 20 coming up in two weeks. Promotion, parking, medical marijuana, way finding signs and and a bike tune up plus concert were all discussed.

Carrying over from previous meetings Kathi Wheeler of Noise without Sound Design showed her mockup of a White Center Shopping Guide. The format includes a list of businesses and a walking map that highlights business in the area. Suggestions from the crowd (which numbered about 25 people) were to consider making it more pocket sized, to possibly use a cartoon version of a business map to portray the area in a friendlier light but there were also opinions voiced that the community should do more research into what has worked for other communities.

13 year-old Pedestrian Struck in Crosswalk, Critically Injured

A 13 year-old Burien girl was injured Aug. 7th after she was struck by a pick-up truck about 7:15 p.m. She was taken to Harborview Medical Center in critical condition.

The accident occurred when the girl, her sister, and a friend were all crossing Ambaum Boulevard S.W. in a marked crosswalk at S.W. 154th St. The driver of a 1990 Ford Ranger was northbound on Ambaum and apparently didn't see the pedestrians.

The victim was just ahead of the other two in the crosswalk and she was the only one hit.

The driver is a 52 year-old man from Burien. He was not booked into jail or cited pending additional investigation.

Detectives believe alcohol on the part of the driver may have been a contributing factor to the accident.

Ballardite sets out to raise awareness about craniosynostosis, help families facing surgery

In October 2009, Crown Hill resident Shelby Davidson, took her four-month old son to a physician for a regular baby check-up. She had noticed that her son's head had formed a ridge and expressed this concern to her physician.

Referred to Seattle Children's Hospital for a scan, Davidson learned that her son had craniosynostosis and would require a surgery that involved taken apart her son's skull and remolded it to make room for the brain to grown properly.

Scared, Davidson searched the web for any information she could find about craniosynostosis and for other families who had gone through this with their child.

Craniosynostosis, she learned, is a birth defect which causes one or more sutures on a baby's head to close earlier than normal. Sutures are connections that separate each individual skull bone. The early closing of a suture leads to an abnormally shaped head. If left untreated these children face a possibility of brain damage, eye sight trouble and potential death from inner-cranial pressure.

"I didn't know anything about cranio when my son was diagnosed and we felt very alone," Davidson said.

Sue Kleitsch appointed as new principal of Whitman Middle School

Susan Enfield, Interim Superintendent of Seattle Public Schools, announced today that she has Sue Kleitsch as the next principal of Crown Hill's Whitman Middle School.

Ms. Kleitsch joined the Whitman family in 1997 and has served as the assistant principal at Whitman for the past 10 years.

Prior to working with middle school students and their families, she taught vocationally approved classes at Marshall Alternative High School. She has her Masters in Education from Seattle University and her Bachelor of Arts from Central Washington University.

"Ms. Kleitsch has demonstrated strength both as an instructional leader and a manager of a diverse and vibrant middle school," Enfield said in the announcement.

Kleitsch replaces Michael Starosky who is the new Consulting Principal in the Human Resources department of Seattle Public Schools, where he will serve as a peer coach to principals.

Candidates for the Whitman principalship were selected from our principal applicant pool and Whitman community members were part of the interview team. Enfield said the Assistant Principal position will be filled as soon as possible.
