'Froshing' is bullying and it is not acceptable

Dear Editor,
I was touched by Jennifer Hall’s report on ‘Froshing’ at Solstice Park, or more accurately punched in the stomach. On June 8, 2007, I was fifteen years old, and I was attacked by three students I didn’t know from Garfield High School. They grabbed me and tried to put me in the trunk of a car; all in the name of “froshing”. I remember that day clearer than anything.

Great offense and defense from Highline was able to control the tempo of the game with great passing that keep West Seattle’s defense on their toes. West Seattle’s goal keeper Haily Watkins stayed busy with Highline’s 23 shots on goal, blocking 15 of them. The Pirates had a few near goals in the 1st half, but the shots were either blocked or missed the goal.

Highline’s scoring got started at the 34 minute mark when sophomore midfielder Aimie Inthoulay dribbled up field and scored with an impressive 35 yard goal.

Volleyball: Seattle Christian tops Charles Wright in four sets

Seattle Christian School's Warriors continued their developmental path to success after outlasting Charles Wright Academy in four sets, 25-19, 15-25, 25-20, 25-19 in Nisqually 1A/2B League high school volleyball action on Monday, October 10, at their home campus in SeaTac.

In the deciding fourth set, the homestanding Warriors broke away from a razor thin 10-9 edge behind the driving serves of Molli Ronish and Hannah Sasaki to gain a 17-10 lead for SCS. These serves also enabled Megan Bryant to slam down several key kills.

Charles Wright rallied within three points three times, the last being at 21-18. Abgail Sauer scored and Seattle Christian enlarged the margin at the end for victory.

According to SCS head coach Amy Kirk, the league record for Seattle Christian improved to 3-4 while its overall mark stands at 4-4. Charles Wright is 1-5 and 3-6 respectively.

"We just worked really hard as a team," said Makenna Wallingford. "Staying in touch with each other, we just fought hard."

Where are the colors of the rainbow?

Dear Mr. Robinson,

Hello, my name is Mary Poi. I am 10 1/2 years old.

I am using the West Seattle Herald for homework that is due at the end of October, on my community. I was wondering can your newspaper put pictures of all colors of people?

My homework is on my community and my community in West Seattle has many colors of people. The West Seattle Herald mostly has white people - always?

Where are the other people, the rest of the community?

I want an A+ on my homework, but it won’t happen without color of the Rainbow, that is my title.

Thank you,
Mary Poi

Ballardite wins Jenise Silva’s Cake vs. Pie Ultimate Rematch

The flour has settled and the results are in from Jenise Silva’s Cake vs. Pie Rematch. And in the end Ballard resident Erica Anpo walked away with top honors in the cake division with her Coconut/Passion Fruit Cake.

The historic rematch was held this year at Vermillion on Capitol Hill. Over 100 people attended the event and watched as 12 pies and 11 cakes (one cake had to bow out at the last minute due to a “flour, sugar and butter emergency”) went head-to-head to settle the age old debate – which is better, cake or pie?

The contest was judged by rock stars in the baking field and included Chef Neil Robertson (Canlis ,Mistral), Chef Carrie Mashaney (Café Juanita, Spinasse) and Cody Ellerd Bay (Seattle Magazine).

During the judging, attendees mixed and mingled while sampling the participating baker’s cakes and pies with drinks mixed up by Vermillion that tasted exactly like chocolate cake and key lime pie.

Along with Anpo’s cake other entries included White Bottom Blackberry Ricotta Pie, Irish Carbomb Cake, Bourbon Butterscotch Cream Pie, Russian Anthill Cake, Honey Thyme Apple Pie and Chocolate Pumpkin Cake with Caramel Glaze - among other.

My View: Widening the Circle of Prosperity

By Mayor Mike McGinn

We are living in a time of deep inequality. Statistics show the United States is experiencing the worst income inequality since 1928. The top 1% control 34% of the nation’s wealth. And it hits unevenly. Communities of color and those who were already experiencing low incomes, even during the boom, are struggling the most.

Unemployment is at 9.1% - that’s lower than it was at the peak of the recession, but still too high. Those who still have jobs aren’t necessarily better off. The New York Times recently published an interesting statistic. The recession technically ended in June 2009. And we have been slowly adding jobs. But since the end of the recession two years ago, household incomes have actually declined by 6.7%. That’s at the same time as bankers are taking home record profits and huge bonuses. Even in what is supposed to be a recovery, we’re still seeing inequality widen.

Edgar emphasizes he is active Burien council candidate

Edgar counters Shaw flyer

Press release from candidate Bob Edgar
Dear Citizens and Voters of Burien;

I, Bob Edgar, am an active candidate for the Burien Council Position No.4. I am willing and eager to serve the citizens of Burien, if I am elected in the November election. I won the Primary Election for this position and I thank you for your votes. You will see me or one of my volunteers doorbelling in your neighborhood and around the city. I would appreciate your support and votes again in this November election.

Today, one of my family members received a political mailer from my opponent, Gordon Shaw. The intent of Mr. Shaw’s mailer was to mislead voters as to whether I was genuinely a candidate for the City Council Position. The flyer has, as its central theme, a letter that I have withdrawn from this election. Mr. Shaw, his campaign manager and treasurer are well aware that I am an active candidate in this election. They are also aware that I never withdrew from the election as it was not allowed under Washington State Law. They are further aware that the reason that I attempted to withdraw-even before the Primary Election-was for personal family and family health issues.

West Seattle High School adds a tree and planter to the Gym lobby

West Seattle High School just added to their interior decor with a six foot wide planter in the gym lobby area that now holds a twenty-five foot tree and plantings that match the school colors of blue and gold.

Special education students will use the new planter to help them learn about planting and taking care of a variety of plants. The planter alone weighs 3800 lbs.

To get it off of the pallet jack that brought the planter into the school Shop teacher Peter McCue had to design a special lift.

With the help of about 20 students the planter was rotated into place.
