SLIDESHOW: Evergreen welcomes new girls’ basketball coach Tasha Hicks

Tasha Hicks is new to Evergreen High School. Really new.

She just moved here in September from California and now she is the new head coach of the girls’ basketball team. She has only been with the team less than two weeks, but in that short time she already has a good rapport and likes what she sees.

So where did she learn the game? Tasha grew up playing basketball at Auburn High School and graduated in 1999. Because of Tasha’s exceptional talent she earned a full ride basketball scholarship to Weber State. She would play only one year before making a tough decision to leave the program to pursue other interests. She has never lost her love of basketball, so when the opportunity to coach came knocking, she opened the door and answered the call.

SLIDESHOW: Seattle Salsa Congress brings the heat to SeaTac Hilton

Rio Bravo Productions described the 6th Annual Seattle Salsa Congress as “an explosion of Latin and world cultures coming together in a celebration of music and dance. West African rhythms calling forth the gods, the infectious sounds of Carnival from Cuba, Spanish troubadours with their dazzling Flamenco guitars, American jazz merging in a fiery tempo. All these diverse cultures weave a tapestry of spirited passion for you to experience at the 6th Annual Seattle Salsa Congress. Brace yourself for something extraordinary. This November Salsa sets off a heat wave in the Northwest.”

Photographer Kurt Howard attended the Thanksgiving weekend event (it ran from Nov. 25 to 27) at the SeaTac Airport Hilton with an estimated 1,200 salsa enthusiasts on Saturday night.

“If you didn’t have a partner someone would go up and ask you to dance. I never got asked due to walking around with my camera (I think),” Howard reported.

Strong gains for Seattle schools

Graduation rate no longer stagnant: up from 67% to 73%

Seattle Public Schools made strong progress during 2010-2011, said Interim Superintendent Dr. Susan Enfield today in her State of the District address. She pointed to student improvements in reading and math, as well as an increase in the four-year high school graduation rate.

Also today, Seattle Public Schools released its annual District Scorecard and individual School Reports. These reports provide a snapshot of each school’s student achievement, absence rates, and family and staff satisfaction.

“Thanks to our dedicated teachers, principals, staff, and engaged families and community partners, we are making great strides,” Dr. Enfield said. “Student performance is improving in nearly every area, and we have developed systems to help us continue to improve.”
