Southeast Asia trip humbles ZippyDogs partners

Elise Lindborg & Kelli Henderson vow to work harder, cull their unused possessions , and fundraise for new wells in Cambodia, all as a response to their recent three-week trip to Thailand, Laos, and Cambodia. Many know these business, and domestic, partners through their promotional products company, ZippyDogs.com

They sent off a mass email to friends with bullet points about some of what stuck with them on their journey. First and second on their list:

"We have it so good in the US. Never ever take our freedom and ability to vote and voice our opinions. Use this freedom!"

"We have running water, electricity, clean toilets, taxes for good roads, police, street signs, regulations, napkins and the many other everyday things we take for granted."

They spoke to the West Seattle Herald about this and other thoughts and impressions gathered from their trip.

Girls Basketball: Federal Way drills Emerald Ridge, 65-43

Raven Benton wanted this win badly.

With first place in the SPSL 4A South Division on the line, Benton felt the need to push herself and her team to a higher level to control the game. In demonstrative fashion, that's what the Federal Way junior wing accomplished, scoring 21 points, hauling in 12 rebounds and joining a full team offensive and defensive control to sweep away state ninth-ranked Emerald Ridge, 65-43, on Wednesday, Feb. 1, in a battle for supremacy at the top of the division.

The Eagles took first place in the division at 13-1 and improved to 15-3 overall. In solo second place rest the Jaguars (12-2, 15-2).

With Federal Way holding a 10-point lead over refusing to fold Emerald Ridge, the energetic Eagles finally closed out their opponents with seven consecutive points.

Doing what she had been doing the entire game, Benton scored a basket on a length of the court drive. Jamie Jones's offensive rebound basket and accompanying free throw ahead of Darah Huertas-Vining's driving basket quickly pushed Federal Way into an insurmountable 57-40 dominance with 2:49 left en route to a game high 22 point lead at the end.

Girls Basketball: Rams take SPSL North title

AUBURN - Wednesday, Feb. 1, at Auburn Riverside High School turned into a history making event for the Mount Rainier girls basketball team.

Overcoming late foul trouble and a terrific rally from their persistent opponents, the state second ranked Rams (19-0, 15-0 league) held off the No. 7 Ravens 78-73 to claim their first South Puget Sound League 4A North Division title in only their second year at Class 4A. The championship also delivers Mount Rainier's first championship banner to hang in its gym.

This victory was truly hard fought, as the Ram led only 75-70 as 29.5 seconds showed in fourth quarter action. Brittany and Jordan McPhee were spectators at this time, having fouled out.

Stepping up under the intense pressure of being fouled and needing to convert critical free throws, senior forward Kiana Gandy was equal to the pressure, draining three of four free throws nestled around an Auburn Riverside missed field goal attempt to give Mount Rainier final access to the top and pushing her final point total to 20.

A Raven three-point buzzer beater created the final scoring of the game.

City, county and police vow to subdue unruly teen behavior at Burien Library

As the final bell rings at Burien-area high schools and junior highs teenagers are unleashed in droves, many feeling the freedom of that gap between class ending and dinner time back home.

A lot of teens end up at Burien’s library, which, to an outsider, might seem like a dream come true (“Your kids voluntarily go to the library!?”). But for many Burienites and others using the library, the teens congregating at and around the library have become a problem.

Complaints of vandalism, drug use, swearing, intimidation, car prowls, pulling fire alarms, loud voices inside a traditionally very quiet place .... the list goes on, and some citizens say they have decided to just stop going during after-school hours.

The complaints reached a higher pitch recently when, on Jan. 26, a fight broke out inside the lobby. According to Burien Sgt. Henry McLaughlin a large crowd of teens approached another teen inside the lobby intent on fighting him.
