At Large in Ballard: Passing the baton

Marilyn Klepper’s teenage daughter Jeanne-Marie died on Mother’s Day in 2001. The 11th anniversary of her death once again fell on Mother’s Day this year. Jeanne-Marie Klepper was a student in the Biotech Academy at Ballard High School when she was diagnosed with a rare “young person’s” cancer – osteosarcoma. A bone cancer that usually manifests in the limbs, her cancer was in her shoulder. A rare disease in a rare spot -- by diagnosis it had greatly metastasized.

The American Cancer Society’s NW Relay for Life in 2001 was scheduled at the Ballard High School track. Jeanne-Marie’s fellow Biotech students had their own team. The event always includes a survivor’s lap. Jeanne-Marie was determined to participate although she asked her mother if she qualified given that she was very ill. “Am I a cancer survivor?”

Her mother told her absolutely yes. “You have survived a lot.”

Pet of the Week: Paddy O'Pembroke is a big dog in a small package

With a name like Paddy O'Pembroke you might expect a dog to be an Irish Setter but no, Paddy is a Pembroke Corgi. He belongs to Dolly Vinal and she got him six years ago from Trengate Kennels in Lacey Washington.

Vinal said that the breeder is a vet who raised Corgis and Paddy is her second one.

She said he's well fed and it's good stuff. It's "very expensive raw food and I think I spend as much on him a month as I do on myself. Good thing he's a small dog."

Paddy will eat "anything and all" for snacks but as a rule he gets and enjoys apples, bananas, beans, grapes and cucumbers. But it's a controlled diet too. "I think if you did self feeding with this dog, he'd explode."

"One of the things that's most impressive to me about him is that he's really an athlete for his size. He can jump up about four feet. He jumps into the back of my Element (Honda) when the tailgate is up. That's pretty high. They call them big dogs in small packages."

SLIDESHOW: West Seattle Wildcats take Liberty 2 -1 in playoffs; Will face Timberline Saturday

by Greg McCorkle

Two runs in the second was all west Seattle needed to overcome Issaquah’s Liberty High School.

Liberty looked like they may get on the scoreboard in the first inning with runners on first and second with no outs but they were unable to pull the trigger. In the second liberty had base runners on second and third.

SLIDESHOW: Click the image above to see more

The lack of offense proved to be costly for Liberty when in the bottom of the second #17 catcher Jimmy Mai hit a leadoff single. Then centerfielder Andrew Snook got on base with another single pushing Mai to third base. Snook stole second and West Seattle threatened with one out. #12 Spenser Elder hit a sacrifice fly to right field driving in Mai and advancing Snook to third base. The next batter third baseman Jeff Freeman tipped a dribbler in front of the plate but the Liberty catcher overthrew first base and as the ball rolled into the outfield Freeman motored around to third and Snook scored a second run.

Liberty got out of the inning but the damage was done.

Historic Fire Station 37 sold for $613,000; Buyers name not released

Money will support Fire Levy Fund

press release
The historic former Fire Station 37, located at 7300 35th Ave. S.W. in West Seattle, has been sold for $613,000, city officials announced today. The city set a minimum price of $250,000 for the property.

With a 5 percent commission on the sale and other minor closing costs, the city netted $579,807.25. The revenue from this sale will help replenish the Fire Facilities and Emergency Response Levy Fund. Levy proceeds and other funding, such as the sale of former fire stations, are being used to upgrade, renovate and replace 32 neighborhood fire stations, among other things. Seattle voters approved the levy in November 2003.

In September 2011, the City Council authorized sale by competitive process of this former West Seattle station and former Fire Station 38 in the Ravenna-Bryant neighborhood. Conclusion of that sale is pending and details will be released once the sale has closed.
