West Seattle Blockwatch Captains' Network back from summer break; Meeting Sept. 25

WSBWCN press release

The monthly West Seattle Block Watch Captains’ Network meetings resume this coming Tuesday, 9/25, after our summer hiatus! It’s been 3 months since our last meeting so we want to hear from you, how did the summer go?

What issue is your Block Watch dealing with the most? Bicycle thefts, mail thefts, problem houses, gunshots, burglaries, other incidents? Are there broader patterns to what we are experiencing individually?

What questions do you have? What do you as a captain receive questions about? Frequently asked questions that we hear: What do I need to do to get my stolen items back? If I install a video camera, will the police use the footage as evidence? If I use the Online Reporting tool, does anyone use that information as evidence?

We will have more information and answers to some of these questions at the meeting. For others, we’ll track down the answers or invite the people who know the answers to attend our future meetings.

Meeting details & agenda
Tuesday, September 25, 2012, 6:30-8 PM
SW Police Precinct, 2300 SW Webster Street (at Delridge Ave SW, next to Home Depot)

Dispose of unwanted, unused or expired medications this Saturday

Got drugs? Or rather -- potentially dangerious expired, unused or unwanted prescription drugs?

Then this Saturday's the day to get rid of them.

On Saturday, Sept. 29, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the Seattle Police Department will be accepting and disposing of any medications you bring to them. You can drop them off at one of the five Seattle precincts, meaning Ballardites will probably want to travel up to the north precinct, located at 10049 College Way N. Seattle WA 98133.

The service is free and anonymous and no questions are asked, according to the press release. Last April, people in Seattle dropped off 700 pounds worth of medications

Ballard Boys & Girls Club says thank you for work done on Day of Giving

William Rodgers, director of athletics at the Ballard Boys and Girls Club, wanted to pass along a message of thanks.

Friday, Sept. 21, was the United Way Day of Caring, when companies from all over the Northwest give some time to help local nonprofits and schools in the community.

For it, 30 employees from the R.J. Reynolds Company spent all day in the Ballard Boys and Girls Club painting, trimming, cleaning and working on several projects throughout the building.

The above picture shows one of those projects: the installation of a new basket in the gym.

"On behalf of the Ballard Boys & Girls Club, we say thank you for all of their hard work and dedication," Rodgers wrote in an email. "The club looks awesome!"

Police Blotter Week of 9-24-12

Crime is not landlocked
A fisherman from West Seattle called the Fish and Game office on Sept. 13 after watching a male illegally shrimping in Elliot Bay (the shrimping season ended on May 1st). Not only was he putting out pots outside of the season, he was also taking his pots down 350 feet, well over the 150 foot limit, and mismarking his buoys as red and white to indicate he was crabbing instead of shrimping. The fisherman claimed Fish and Game told him to take the suspect’s gear and pots if he saw them out again. Sure enough, the guy was out shrimping a few days later, so the fisherman pulled all of his gear into his boat. There was a man in a 16-foot Lund boat watching him nearby. The next day while finishing up, the fisherman was approached by that same man from the boat. The suspect put his hands around the fisherman’s throat and demanded his pots. The victim said he had already called Fish and Game and was calling police. The suspect left quickly in his blue 2000 Land Rover, but the victim was able to take a photo of his license plate. Police now have a name and description of the illegal shrimper.
