Dogs go to the Burien council

SLIDESHOW

The Burien City Council went to the dogs on Oct.1. More accurately, the dogs went to the council.

Several dog owners brought their pets to the council meeting to show support for a new off-leash dog park in Burien.

The canine audience contributed occasional barks and heavy breathing as new Highline schools superintendent Susan Enfield introduced herself to the council for the first time.

Kellie Bassen was among those who brought their dogs up to the podium during public comments to urge the council to add the park to the park board’s master plan.

Bassen is spearheading the group called B-Town Dog Owners Group. The group plans to work on such tasks as cleaning up a park, partnering with the parks department, building fences, getting running water, creating a place for poop, creating signage and enlisting landscaping services.

Parks board vice president Ed Dacy urged the lawmakers to move ahead on the dog park.

Burien Councilmember Jack Block Jr., whose own dog sat on the floor next to him, said the group’s goal is to create and maintain the park through an all-volunteer effort.

ReverbFest delivers diverse range of local music to Ballard (Part One)

By Dusty Henry

(This is the first of two articles on ReverbFest. This piece reviews a few of the bands that were on in the earlier hours. Check back for a review of the later hours.)

There is no word in the English language that describes the feeling of your spine hitting a bar stool -- especially when you’ve been hit by your cameraman who has the lead singer of Monogamy Party (Kennedy) wrapped around his body pushing you into said bar 30 seconds into their set.

That’s exactly what happened at Seattle Weekly’s ReverbFest, which hit Ballard once again on Oct. 6, showcasing local bands at venues such as the Tractor Tavern, the Sunset Tavern, Miro Tea and others.

Rauda’s big night not enough as Ballard loses to Skyline with Heavy 64-17 loss

Christopher Duclos

The Beavers arrived in Sammamish confident and ready to throw down with top ranked Skyline High school, but as it was Skyline's homecoming game, they were in for a rowdy, hostile environment.

Despite an early and exciting lead by the Beavers in the first quarter (7-6), the Spartans responded heavily, gaining 30 points in the first quarter alone.

The first Beaver touchdown was made possible by quarterback Johnny Verduin and senior wideout Nate Rauda. Rauda’s first reception included a Skyline face mask penalty. Then, on third down, Verduin found Rauda for the touchdown. This was one of three scores Ballard succeeded against the Skyline defense. Later in the first quarter, senior kicker Andrew Ingham put up a 39-yard field goal to split the difference to 23-10.

The two teams entered halftime with Skyline up big 51-17.

Though competition was heavy, Senior Nate Rauda was a bright spot for the Beavers. He caught 7 passes for 171 yards and a touchdown, his longest reception was for 52 yards. Rauda shined on defense, too, leading the team in tackles with 6.

SLIDESHOW: Miss Thriftway cruises through West Seattle

People at the Fauntleroy ferry dock were treated to a close up view of a genuine hydroplane on Sunday Oct. 7 as the Miss Thriftway, a reproduction of the original 1955 thunderbolt headed back to its home on Vashon Island.

The boat had been at Lake Chelan for the weekend as part of a larger event, the Mahogany and Merlot boat event. Also part of the event were Miss Bardahl, Miss Thriftway, Miss Wahoo & Miss Burien.

In charge of the hydroplane at the dock were Steve Payne (partner) and Leslie Parker.
At the event they sold rides, basically four laps around the lake. "You sit there for two and then we give you the steering wheel for two laps. You go 130 to 140 mph," said Payne. The rides are not cheap though. They go for $1000. "We had one gentleman, who had just turned 60 and we told him how much it was and he said, 'I'll talk to my wife,' and she's saying 'Well, maybe next year dear,' and they went away then ten minutes later he comes back and says, 'How about now.' House is a total loss from early morning fire; Caused by embers from fireplace

Seattle Fire Department press release- from Fireline

A Seattle Fire Investigator is calling an early morning West Seattle house fire accidental. The cause was determined to be burning embers from the fireplace igniting the carpet and furniture in the living room of the 2-story home with a daylight basement.

At 3:27 a.m., the Fire Alarm Center received a 911 call from a neighbor, who reported a full involved house fire in the 5400 block of 45th Avenue SW. West Seattle Engine Company 32 arrived first to find the lone occupant outside the house but flames shooting out the front door, the front window and higher than the chimney. The flames were also exposing to a home north of the fire house.

Knowing all occupants were out the house the firefighters took a defensive position and attacked the flames from the outside. After 15 minutes, changed tactics and went offensive. Crew took hose lines inside and began to knock down the heavy flames. It took crews 45 minutes to completely extinguish the fire.
