NHUAC meeting on Nov. 1 presents King County Dept. of Transportation speakers

"What to expect this winter and impacts from the diminishing budget" to be discussed

NHUAC press release:

North Highline Unincorporated Area Council invites you to the monthly meeting, Thursday, November 1, 7pm at the North Highline Fire Station (1243 112th Street, SW).

We are pleased to be hosting Brenda Bauer and Jay Osborne from the King County Department of Transportation, who will present an overview of current service delivery and "What to expect this winter and impacts from the diminishing budget."

As noted at previous meetings by the County DOT, and King County Council Member, Joe McDermott at NHUAC's Oct 4 Annexation Forum, the county has moved to a "tiered" level of service for unincorporated area roads. Under this plan, Tier 5 roads, 36 miles of which make up the residential streets in North Highline, will receive "virtually no storm and snow response. Maintenance will be limited and based on factors such as life safety and risk, resulting is a growing number of deteriorating roads. Users can expect to see some closures...these
roads may also be downgraded to a gravel surface.."

Police Blotter Week of 10-29-12

Did you mean anarchist state?
It was just before 6 p.m. on Oct. 22 when an employee at a grocery store on the 4200 block of S.W. Morgan St. was taking a break and eating some food. He watched two young males (they looked to be under 21) walking towards the front of the store with a frozen food item and a bottle of liquor. The employee got up and followed the juveniles as they bypassed the register and walked out the door. He confronted them in the parking lot and told them the items needed to be returned. The suspect with the food and booze in hand replied, “… this is a Communist State and I can take whatever I want!” The employee grabbed the bottle of alcohol and the second suspect punched him in the face. In the ensuing melee, the liquor dropped and shattered and the frozen food box was ripped open, scattering frozen bits about. The suspects fled north on California Ave S.W. and the employee said he was fine after the punch. A witness told police he/she recognized one of the suspects as a former student in the area and gave them a name.

Football: Ballard's offensive onslaught takes care of Lynnwood

By Christopher Duclos

The big names Nate Rauda, Dominique Smith and Johnny Verduin of Ballard offense led the charge on Friday evening as Ballard rolled past the Lynnwood High Knights for a non-conference showdown. A high scoring, well played game all around by Ballard earned them their first win on the road.

Johnny Verduin rushed for the first touchdown off an 11-yard run to put Ballard up in the first quarter. Lynnwood would then respond off a 48-yard pass from Lynnwood quarterback Justin Cachopo. This brought the score to 7-6 after a failed two-point conversion attempt. Ballard’s Johnny Verduin then found his favorite target, Nate Rauda, for a 1-yard pass play.

The second quarter scoring was fueled by Dominique Smith as he scored a touchdown off a 1-yard run. Smith followed up on defense by returning an interception 54 yards to the house for a touchdown. Lynnwood then responded with a touchdown bringing the score to 27-13 Ballard.

Take Two #53: Campaign Ads and Subjective Truth

By Kyra-lin Hom

Is anyone else out there sick and tired of campaign ads or this entire campaigning season for that matter? It's one thing to try and educate the voting public about extremely pressing political matters. It's another entirely to smear the opposing side in a 30 second, emotion-invoking TV promo. At the rate this campaign season is going, third party fact-checking groups can barely keep up with all the glaring inconsistencies, truth-bending and outright lies.

Community

By Georgie Bright Kunkel

They say opposites attract. I suspect there may be some truth in that. But in my own experience I find that opposites often grate on each other’s consciousness. Another saying is that birds of a feather flock together. So if people have more in common they tend to gravitate to each other. You have heard the saying “No man is an island.” but as a feminist I would say “No person is an island.”

We in this country value individualism more than in most cultures. After all, the early settlers left the old country that did not respect their beliefs and struck out on their own--but not as one person in the wilderness. No, not at all. They soon built villages and developed a way of life in community groups.
