SLIDESHOW: Girls 1A Championship Soccer Game - University Prep (3) @ Seattle Christian (2) 11-17-2012

SHORELINE - Sustained pressure from an aggressive opponent ended the unbeaten status of the Seattle Christian girls soccer team in a 3-2 Class 1A WIAA/Dairy Farmers of Washington/Les Schwab Tires championship loss to University Prep of Seattle on Saturday, Nov. 17, at Shoreline High School.

"That's the best talent we've seen, so it took a little bit of getting used to," said Seattle Christian head coach Melissa Dunckley. "It took us out of our rhythm for part of the first half, and we couldn't quite get it back in the second half. They had high pressure and they were fast out wide. We came back again, but just could not make one more comeback in the second half."

From the opening whistle the Warriors (20-1) were on defensive alert with U-Prep (17-2-1) entrenching themselves in SC territory for the better part of 27 minutes on the strength of crisp ground passing and singing speed.

Puma persistence paid off when Claire O'Brien kicked in a four-yard goal from the left side off a rebound in the 23rd minute.

SLIDESHOW: Girls 1A Soccer Quarter Finals - Cashmere (0) @ Seattle Christian (4) 11-16-2012

SHORELINE - Complete cooperation from all areas catapulted the Seattle Christian Warriors to an overwhelming 4-0 shut out of Cashmere on Friday, Nov. 16, at Shoreline Stadium, enabling SC to reach the Class 1A girls soccer championship encounter against University Prep..

"We knew they were going to be tough, so we had to keep possesion," said a pleased Seattle Christain head coach Melissa Dunckley. "This was our best game of the season. All the forwards from the outside and inside, midfielders and defenders worked well as a whole group."

Seattle Christian (20-0) put Cashmere on notice early with blistering attacks and dominating defense that sent the Warriors into a 1-0 lead.

In the third minute Megan Nielsen sent a through ball from the right side into Faith Pizzey who beat a defender to chip the ball left of the goal keeper.

"Megan's pass split the middle and I just got it and shot it in," said Pizzey

Cashmere attempted to ignite an early offensive with high kicks in the steady rain, spending seven minutes harassing the rock ribbed Warrior defense.

Stalled project known as ‘The Hole’ back on track

West Seattle’s skyline continues to change.

To the chagrin of those resistant to West Seattle losing its small town feel and the delight of those looking forward to progress, another big project for West Seattle’s Triangle at Fauntleroy and Alaska is coming, and this one will fill up “The Hole.”

It was 2009 when a massive hole was dug at the northwest corner of Fauntleroy and Alaska in the Triangle neighborhood, and then left to fill up with seasonal rains. Symbolizing a hurting economy and development cycle, it became locally known as “The Hole” as the proposed project stalled for several years.

Centerstage is pleased to announce its production of Paul Hendy’s CINDERELLA.

For most Brits, a visit to the local theatre to see the pantomime is
as much part of the Christmas season as Turkey is to an American’s
Thanksgiving. What is particularly appealing to the Brits, and now to
Federal Way audiences, are the exuberant traditions of “panto”. This
kind of pantomime is anything but silent. It’s loud, boisterous, full
of music, ridiculous humor and audience involvement.

The semantic confusion over the word “pantomime” began in 1712, when
an Italian theatre company brought a mime show to London. The
performance was preceded by a spoken synopsis. Producers noted that
audiences preferred the spoken word, so the dumb show was eliminated
and the dialogue retained - but the shows retained the name
“pantomime”.

As the centuries passed, so many beloved traditions emerged: the Dame
(an ugly self-obsessed older woman played by a man); the principal boy
(the male lead played by a woman); traditional routines, re-cycled
year after year; the juvenile ensemble; characters representing Good
and Evil; the fairytale plot; the vaudeville humor; parodies of
popular music of the day and last but not least, audience

Help create the new school for the Genesee Hill site tonight

Design team is seeking public input

If you want to have a voice in how the school intended to be built on the Genesee Hill site you'll want to attend the meeting at Schmitz Park Elementary School from 6:30 to 8 tonight. The school is located at 5000 SW Spokane Street.
Here's the map if you need it.

The design team for the new school will be there and they want to hear from the community.

The district is planning a multistory building that will serve from 500 to 650 students and meet district guidelines for elementary schools, but the specifics of what it will look like, what it will contain, and where it will be located on the site are all up for discussion.

Planting A Life: How Keeping a Garden is Good for the Soul (Nov.)

By Rev. Judith Laxer

At the beginning of November, I am like the squirrels: seemingly everywhere at once in the November garden. Perhaps my hair is not quite as overall grey as theirs, but I scurry to get it all done between the Pacific Northwest raindrops just the same. I collect the last of the still green tomatoes, placing them inside on the windowsill to slowly ripen. I cut another hearty sprig of lemon verbena and hang it on my drying wrack anticipating that future cup of tea. I pull up a few more carrots and praise their length as I inhale their earthy sweetness. I count how many more beets are still nestled in the soil waiting for the first frost to enhance their sugar content. I check on the kale starts I planted a few weeks ago to make sure they have taken. I deadhead the multiple blooms on the surprise sunflower that graced my garden this year, hoping to coax those last little buds to flower, their bright and cheery yellow extending the presence of Summer color.

Give thanks and show gratitude at Sanislo Wetland Nov. 24; Volunteers needed for planting

The Puget Creek Watershed Alliance has the perfect way to show your gratitude and work off a few of those extra calories. They are holding a Thanksgiving Planting at the Sanislo Wetland Nov. 24 and need your help.

Police Blotter Week of 11-19-12

Gas station ruckus
Two men in their 40s were causing trouble at two gas stations on the 7100 block of Delridge Way S.W. on Nov. 8. After a clerk at the Shell station called 911 to report two males were causing a disturbance in his shop, the two men walked across the street to the AM/PM. They both went into the single person bathroom, prompting the AM/PM clerk to knock on the door and tell them to leave. According to the police report, the white male suspect started yelling at the clerk to “speak English.” The clerk reported he came out of the bathroom and grabbed him by the chest, then pulled out a small baton and swung, but missed. The clerk went behind his counter, pulled out a baseball bat and called 911. When police arrived, both the bat and baton were cocked and ready. The baton-wielder was arrested for suspicion of assault and had a bottle of pills he claimed to have found on the ground. None of them were controlled substances.
