TT #62: The He Said She Said of Gun Control

By Kyra-lin Hom

Since Hartford, Connecticut's elementary school massacre, gun control has been one of the hottest debates both in the political and social sectors right up there with global warming, healthcare and the fiscal cliff. Everyone from the President to the NRA, from the Tea Party to my hippy boyfriend's shoeless toes is weighing in. Scour the Internet and you will find a seemingly endless supply of statistics, facts, charts – usually in decent contradiction with each other – and rhetoric supporting both sides. It gets downright mind-boggling and not just a bit irritating. Like any other heated campaign, some 'facts' are simply wrong but most are real if somewhat academically questionable.

Yes, the number of firearm homicides in the US is at an all time low. But also yes, the number of nonfatal gun injuries in the US has been on the rise since 2008 – and gun suicides are the highest they've been since 1998.

Our Past

By Georgie Bright Kunkel

Every culture preserves its past, either by passing down oral history or more formally by housing collections of artifacts that are preserved from generation to generation. With our population aging, there is more interest in museum collections. As my friends downsize to move to smaller quarters and places that offer lifetime care, I remind them to offer their memorabilia to a local historical society or museum. I have already sent diaries, letters and family heirlooms to the Washington State History Museum, The Rosie the Riveter Museum in California, and the University of Washington Museum. Maybe you have some precious things you could offer to one of the places mentioned above.

Burn ban in effect: No indoor or outdoor fires, to protect air quality

On Sunday, Jan. 13 at noon, the Puget Sound Clean Air Agency issued a Stage 2 burn ban in King Councy, in order to protect residents from worsening air quality.

Stage 2 means no burning is allowed in any wood-burning fireplaces, wood stoves or fireplace inserts, or pellet stoves.

And no outdoor fires are allowed, including bonfires, camp fires and fire pits -- this means no fires at Golden Gardens.

Burn ban violations are subject to $1,000 fines.

Natural gas and propane stoves or inserts are OK during a Stage 2 burn ban.

Air pollution has reached "Unhealthy for sensitive groups" in many areas around Puget Sound, particularly where wood burning is common. Agency forecasters expect the current cold, dry, and stagnant weather conditions to extend well into the week.

The Clean Air Agency will continue to closely monitor the air quality and weather situation.

Beaver Basketball Roundup: Boys go 1-1 on the week; Girls pick up a couple of wins

By Christopher Duclos

Last week's basketball action featured basketball double headers on the road on Wednesday, Jan. 9 and Friday, Jan. 11. Beaver basketball teams traveled to northeast Lake Washington to be hosted by Bothell then to their crosstown foe Roosevelt two days later.

Wednesday Jan. 9, at Bothell

Nancy MacGeorge and Shelby Bailess led the girls in scoring: MacGeorge with 19 and Bailess with 15.

Boys varsity took the court following the girl’s victory. Going into this matchup, the Beavers knew that a victory wouldn’t come easy. Bothell is ranked number 1 in the state so far this season with an undefeated 13-0 record.

For Phinney Ridge couple, marriage finally possible

For Liz Wagner and Kelsey Stokes, who have been dating for three and one-half years, it was always the plan to get married. But being able to do so legally was the last thing on their minds. As a same-sex couple, that right had been denied before to them before they were even born, and there was no reason to believe that it would be otherwise even within their lifetime.

Of course, sometimes, fate intervenes.

Just three days after Wagner proposed to Stokes in January of 2012, they were surprised by an announcement in the Washington State Legislature that a bill was moving forward to legalize same-sex marriage within the state.

Then, an opposition campaign gathered enough support to put take the matter to ballot. Considering the history -- no state has managed to both legalize marriage in the legislature and then win against opposition in the elections -- there was then little reason to believe that same-sex marriage would be approved once and for all.

But as we know now, Washington State had another surprise in store. On Nov. 6, the people spoke, and same-sex marriage won by a wide margin, 53.7 percent to 46.3.

SLIDESHOW: Sealth Lady Seahawks lose to the girls of Chongqing Nankai 40-57

The Sealth Seahawk girls basketball team lost to the girls of Chongqing Nankai… but did they actually lose?
Sport is a funny thing. In a world of suspicion and divisiveness sports can actually bring people together under the banner of fair play.

Athletes don’t care about politics or language. They care about the commonality of completion. Win, lose, or draw it’s all about the effort given on the court. That’s what the game between the Sealth Seahawks and the Nankai team was all about. This was evident after the game when all of the girls gathered on the court after the game and hugged, smiled, and caressed each other. There is a lesson to be learned from this encounter… we are more alike than we are different.

UPDATE 2: Michelle Shocked Meander's Kitchen performance cancelled; Replaced with Queer Burlesque youth benefit show

UPDATE 2:
Meander's Kitchen owner Miranda Krone, has taken steps to react in a positive way to the cancellation of the performance by Michelle Shocked whose appearance was cancelled yesterday following a performance in San Francisco during which the singer made some "Homophobic" remarks. Krone made an announcement on her Facebook page that in place of the cancelled performance she would sponsor a "Queer Burlesque and Cabaret" show as a benefit for local LGBT youth. Krone wrote"

"As many of you know by now, Meander's Kitchen was scheduled to host Michelle Shocked on April 26th, and have cancelled that show. Instead, we have rescheduled a Queer Burlesque and Cabaret for that night as a benefit for local queer youth. By supporting our youth and helping to create a sense of place, community and self, we help to short circuit the cultural influences that so often leave us feeling alone, out of place, and living with self-hatred and denial. This is only one aspect of fighting bigotry, but it one that is key to it Getting Better, and one that fills me personally with hope.
I hope we'll see you April 26th. More details to come. *Smooches*
