New kids on the brewing block

Populuxe Brewing opening soon

By Pete Treperinas, UW News Lab

Ballard’s brewing community will have a new member in a matter of weeks.

Populuxe Brewing, located in the 800 block of NW 49th St, is set to open in early February.

Ballard residents Pete Charbonnier and Jiri Zatloukal and their wives, Amy Besunder and Judy Scarcia, purchased the building last July. It had previously housed both a cabinet shop and Oddvar’s Automotive. In recent years, however, it has been, as Charbonnier described it, “raw space.”

All four of the owners have day jobs, but nonetheless have been busy adding plumbing and tailoring the 850-square-foot building to accommodate brewing.

Populuxe’s brewhouse is just a barrel and a half in size, giving Charbonnier and Zatloukal the ability to brew about 45 gallons at a time. Their small setup is known as a nano-brewery.

But keeping it small-scale is what Charbonnier and Zatloukal are used to. The two have been home brewing in Zatloukal’s garage for years and have even entered local competitions.

The Psychic View: Peak Experiences

by Marjorie Young

I’ve been blessed, on very rare occasions, with what I consider ‘Nirvana Moments’…when I mysteriously connect with something utterly beyond comprehension and expression; when ‘the painted veil, which those who live call life,” is lifted. These incidents, which manifest unbidden, have altered my life forever, thrusting me into a ‘reality’ never before imagined. The first occurrence took place when I was no more than five, in my Rhode Island home. Later on, the locale proved more exotic…a Hindu Temple on the outskirts of Kathmandu, inside an ancient tomb in Egypt’s Valley of the Kings. It would be futile to attempt to describe the glory and ‘validity’ of these moments, and that is not my intention here. Rather, I wish to raise the question…why does it prove impossible for such ‘revelations’ to endure? Why can’t we somehow remain in that state of ‘knowingness’ and ‘bliss’?

SLIDESHOW: Wildcats bitten by Panthers 65-54

West Seattle never led at any time during their game vs the Seattle Prep Panthers Jan. 28. The Panthers just wouldn’t let them. The Wildcats started slow- down by twelve points at the end of one- and couldn’t get their motor revved up enough to get any momentum. West Seattle found themselves down by fourteen points at the half.

The Wildcats fought back and pulled within six points at the end of three in part because of hot shooting by LaTrey Newsome and Deandre Love, and a defense that created turnovers that transitioned into fast break points. At one point in the third the Wildcats pulled within four points but couldn’t get any closer and the period ended with a 50-44 deficit.

It looked as though West Seattle could mount a comeback in the fourth but the Wildcats looked tired. The offense that came out to open the half vanished.

Shots weren’t dropping and the Wildcats made passes that a blind man could catch. Unfortunately the recipients of those passes were dressed in Panther colors. Seattle Prep took advantage of those errant passes and quickly converted then into fast break points.

National Drug Facts Week comes to Cascade and Evergreen

For the next two weeks (from Jan. 28 through Feb. 8), students at Cascade Middle School and high schoolers at the Evergreen Campus in White Center are in for a crash course on drug facts.

National Drug Facts Week is driven by the National Institute on Drug Abuse and implemented locally by prevention intervention specialists working at Cascade (Haneen Ahmad) and Evergreen (Maria McDonald).

Haneen Ahmad, the specialist working at Cascade (she works for Navos through King County funding), said the goal is to educate students not only about the affects drugs can have on an individual, but beyond as well.

On Monday, Jan. 28, Ahmad had Cascade students busy writing on long rolls of butcher paper to create a mural in the cafeteria.

The question posed: “How do drugs affect us, our family, friends and community?”

With fundraiser, Ballard High baseball hopes to play at Safeco Field

In the near future, the Ballard High baseball players might make like the pros and play at Safeco Field.

But first, they need your help.

If the baseball program reaches their fundraising goal of selling 1,000 tickets to a Mariners game, they themselves will get the opportunity to play at Safeco Field.

From Ballard High baseball's website:

"That’s right, the Beaver Nine will be stepping into the same batter’s box as the pros! They’ll be fielding grounders on the same infield as Dustin Ackley, and slinging fastballs from the same mound as King Felix! They’ll also get their names displayed on the largest video screen in Major League Baseball, which the Mariners are proudly installing as you read!"

How rad would that be? Answer: Super rad.

Mariners Game Ticket Info:

Thursday, April 11th, 7:05 p.m. vs. Texas Rangers
$12 fundraising price per ticket ($20 regular box office price)
20 ticket bundle for $200
View Reserved seating (300 level, right above 1st base)

Watson walks on to success

SEATTLE - Kennedy Catholic High School graduate Tre Watson has been acknowledged as a big time playmaker throughout his athletic career.

After 22 months of college game inactivity, Watson hit the field with a huge impact in the University of Washington's Sept. 1 season opener versus San Diego State and would start the next five games at cornerback before contributing greatly as a special teams player and situational defensive back while playing in all games during the season.

On the first drive of the SDSU match up, he returned an interception 34 yards to set up the first Husky touchdown while also notching three tackles.

Against SEC and national powerhouse Louisiana State University he had six tackles and two pass breakups including tackles to keep the home team from scoring inside the 5-yard line.

Watson followed up this effort by scoring on a 79-yard return of a blocked kick against Portland State while also making three tackles.

Competing against PAC-12 national powers Stanford and Oregon, the former Lancer had two and four tackles, respectively.

Police Blotter Week of 1-28-13

Robbed on the bus
It was Jan. 23, around 5:30 p.m., when a man minding his own business, listening to music on his headphones, and riding Metro’s Rt. 120 bus realized someone was sitting behind him where only moments before the seat was empty. The suspect, who came from the rear of the bus, asked the man about his headphones before ripping them off his head, and then reached over the seat to steal the victim’s MP3 music player. The victim started to turn around but was told to stop. The suspect claimed he had a handgun pointed at the victim’s back (through the seat), and told him “not to do anything stupid.” The suspect (no description given) and an acquaintance got off the bus at the 8800 block of 25th Ave. S.W.
