16th annual Chief Sealth Basketball and Life Skills camp set for this summer

Sealth Basketball and Life Skills Camp Summer 2013 Information:
The organizers are excited to host the 16th annual Sealth Basketball and Life Skills camp at Chief Sealth International High School and Denny International Middle School this summer.

Last year, they hosted more than 350 campers in multiple sessions. The emphasis of the program is to teach the fundamentals of the game in part of a fun and competitive basketball experience, but also to emphasize the Life Skills necessary to be successful in school and life, both intellectually, and socially.

The camp is run by the coaching staff at Sealth with the help of many high school and college students who are put through a lengthy mentorship training in order to be prepared to work with the campers.

Highline Sports Briefs 3-11-13

McPhee named state's best
Brittany McPhee of Mount Rainier High School was named as the state's girls basketball Player of the Year by the Seattle Times last week.
McPhee is only a junior and she led the Lady Rams to a third-place state Class 3A finish.

Association honors Walters
The United States Tennis Association\Pacific Northwest Section announced its final men's open tennis rankings for 2012. Seattle's Rick Kovacevich and Normandy Park's Steve Walters were named co-No. 1 ranked in men's open doubles in 2012. It is the third time they have held or shared the No. 1 men's doubles ranking in the PNW section. They were also ranked No. 1 in 2002 and 2007. Kovacevich and Walters won PNW circuit stops in Yakima and Seattle and took runners-up finishes in Bellevue and Vancouver in 2012.

Lupus Walk scheduled for May
The annual Lupus Walk held to raise funds for the fight against the Lupus disease has been scheduled for Saturday, May 25 at Liberty Park in Renton.

Kennedy Catholic opened its lacrosse season with a 9-8 victory over Peninsula/Gig Harbor on Friday, March 8.
Ashton Pieris scored three goals and had five ground balls for JFK as Anthony Parkers had two goals and six ground balls and Sabastian Farraro one goal, one assist and six ground balls.
Charles Bergseth came through with nine saves.
Boys soccer
Shorecrest 1, Kennedy 0
The Lancers' soccer team opened on the losing end of a 1-0 score at Shoreline Stadium just north of Seattle this past Friday.
Ben Schoedel scored the game's lone goal for Shorecrest on an assist from Alex Ramsey and David Miller earned the shutout on goal.

Saturday, March 9
Charles Wright 7, Foster 5
Foster scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh and final inning Saturday, but still lost by two to Charles Wright of Tacoma.
Henry Cheney of Charles Wright hit 3-for-3 with a double, two home runs and five RBI against the Bulldogs.
Foster was the home team for the action at Showalter Middle School in Tukwila.

Mayor Mike McGinn and Seattle City Council President Sally J. Clark officially announced the formation of the Economic Development Commission (the Commission) to examine Seattle’s ability to compete in the global economy of the 21st century.

“Since I launched the Seattle Jobs Plan in 2010, we’ve been hearing from the people of Seattle who are building our recovery that they need responsive city government, a supportive regulatory environment, investments in infrastructure, and skilled workers,” said Mayor Mike McGinn. “I’m looking forward to working with the Commission and the insights and ideas that they will bring to continue to build an innovative economy that is sustainable, that enhances our quality of life, and that helps more people share in our prosperity.”

Members of the Commission represent a cross section of business, industry and higher education to advise the Mayor and City Council on the development of plans, policies, regulations, and strategies that have substantial impact on creating and maintaining an innovative economy that is resilient, sustainable, and equitable.

Bike Ride to Obliterate Cancer is Coming to West Seattle and White Center

The first-ever Obliteride will soon spin through West Seattle and White Center. Routes for the 25-, 50-, 100- and 180-mile rides have just been released. They offer various distances and terrains so all levels of riders can participate and make their marks against cancer. Obliteride is a fundraising bike ride to benefit lifesaving cancer research at Fred Hutch. It features an entire weekend of cycling, celebration and concerts Aug. 9-11, 2013.

“Obliteride is a community-wide event that everyone can participate in by riding, volunteering or cheering on participants as they roll though your community,” said Amy Lavin, Obliteride’s executive director. “We would love to see people get involved by volunteering or lining the streets with signs honoring loved ones or friends who have battled cancer or are in the fight today. Simply come to the end of your driveway and cheer on the riders. We’d love to see everyone out there!”

Chief Sealth's World Water Week events announced

Seattle Public Schools press release on Chief Sealth International High School's World Water Week festivities, March 19 - 22:

World Toilet Organization keynote March 19 will kick off student-led conference on global and local water issues

Students, teachers, and members of Chief Sealth International High School community will come together for a week dedicated to raising awareness about global and local water issues during the third annual World Water Week. This year’s festival themes are sanitation and health.

On Tuesday, March 19, World Water Week presents keynote speaker Jack Sim. Sim, founder of the World Toilet Organization, uses humor to turn an often-taboo topic into a serious conversation about sustainable sanitation in developing countries. Sim has become a true environmental hero. The event is co-sponsored by Town Hall Seattle and will take place in the Chief Sealth International High School Auditorium.

Ballard District Council March 13 meeting: Meet new community officer, hear NSF proposals

It's time for the monthly Ballard District Council this Wednesday, 7 p.m. at the Ballard Branch Library.

While there are no heavy-hitting guest stars this time around, you will get the chance to meet your new community officer Tim Wear (a fond farewell to Scott McGlashan, who alas took a different job, though he served us well); hear about proposals for the Neighborhood Street Fund; and listen to Ballard Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Mike Stewart talk about a partnership with Smart Growth.

As usual -- well, despite my hiatus last month -- I will be there.

Parking is available underneath the library. Public is welcome.
