KC Sheriff Urquhart's campaign kick-off hosted by Holmes, Satterberg

King County Sheriff John Urquhart held his campaign kick-off re-election Wednesday, April 17, at the House of Hong in the International District. Co-sponsoring the event were King County Prosecuting Attorney Dan Satterberg, Seattle City Attorney, Pete Holmes, and former United States Attorney, John McKay.

In the 2012 election Urquhart defeated Sheriff Steve Strachan. This was a special election to complete the remaining one year of Sue Rahr’s unexpired term. The November, 2013 election will be for a full, four year term. Urquhart is so far unopposed.

Urquhart asked his family to join him on stage. They include his wife, Shelley, and two daughters, Meagan, a pre-K instructor at Bella Mente Early Learning in West Seattle, and Anna, an ICU nurse in New York City. He praised King County Sheriff's Office Deputy for White Center, Brian J. Barnes for voluntarily calming a family during a domestic crisis in Federal Way with the help of his Spanish language skills.

Dutchie, West Seattle and White Center's Duchess of Retail, says goodbye

You might know her by any number of nicknames: Dutchie, Duchess, Dutch, Darling, Ms. Sterling, Silver Lady or Ms. Hollywood.

She’s been a fixture of White Center and West Seattle for nearly four decades now, and anyone with deep roots in the area at least has a relative who knows her. She’s the cashier who’s been taking our money with a smile all that time, forming bonds with coworkers and customers alike, to the point where many have declared her their de facto aunt or grandmother. Her trademark look has always been enough sterling silver bracelets and necklaces to open up an ad-hoc jewelry shop if she ever so desired.

All good things must come to an end, they say, and such is the case with Dutchie, who retired on April 17 after nearly 17 years at McClendon Hardware. Before that she spent 10 years as a cashier for Ernst Hardware where Staples stands now in Westwood Village and prior to that, 10 years at Olson’s Value-rite Drug, where Starbucks is now at the Morgan Junction.

Who is Dutchie?

Press release:

Supporters of the Interstate 5/State Route 509 Coalition and the newly formed Puget Sound Gateway Project can now get information and updates online.

The SR 167, SR 509 and I-5 Puget Sound Gateway Project would relieve traffic congestion and improve freight mobility by completing the long-planned SR 167 and SR 509 corridor connections to I-5.

The new website for the SR 509/I-5 portion of the project was produced by the coalition, which includes the Port of Seattle, the cities of Burien, Des Moines, Federal Way, Kent, Normandy Park, SeaTac and Tukwila, area chambers, labor and business interests that will benefit from the improved access and new job creation.

The website is online at www.TimeFor509Now.org and includes an option for organizations, businesses and individuals interested to get involved and add their names to the list of supporters.

An Untold Life: Emily Williamson

By Maggie Nicholson

When Emily Williamson was a child, she resided with her family in a small, cabin-like home on Bainbridge Island. She was often alone as a young girl, and solitude forged within her an insightful commune with the world. Her mother ran an arts and crafts store in Bainbridge and sculpted colorful figures out of Play-Doh. Emily would sit alone in the woods atop tree stumps by the muddy water and reflect on the lives around her. She saw not only beauty in the world, but a purpose and meaning for all within it.

Emily had a thoughtful nature and gave her full attention to a number of creative projects, seeing her riotous passions through until they shed light upon something new. She sewed multicolored dolls of fabric cloths and rags, deepening the color of their cheeks with red paint. She wrote two full-length fiction novels. Her paintings and doodles are scattered through West Seattle like patches of native grass. At certain points in her life, Emily had an inexhaustible artistic energy, and she flitted from one medium to the next like a butterfly.
